Splat Washables in Electric Blue, Hot 4 Pink, Purple Swag, Totally Red -- pics, swatches, review

Hello, Beautiful!

Some of you know I have electric navy blue highlights on the underside of my brown hair. I'm not afraid of color in my hair, and I think it can be a really fun way to change your look. However, bleaching the hair and getting it dyed is a serious commitment. Some people would love to try out color in their hair but may not want that commitment. Well guess what? Splat has come up with a great line of Washables for color that comes out when you shampoo! Now before you think these are just like those colored gels you see around Halloween, think again! I'll explain everything in my review at the end of this post.

Check out my pics, swatches, stats, and review...

Splat Washables PRO's & CON's:
PRO's: no commitment, easy to use, shows up even on darker hair colors without the need to bleach, doesn't dry hard!
CON's: ?

Basic Stats for Splat Washables:
Formula: liquid-gel
Wear: washes out when you shampoo
Coverage: buildable; varies depending on natural hair color
Shade Info: currently available in 4 shades
Cost/Availability: $7 to $8 per box, depending where you shop (1.5 fl oz full size). Available at most drugstore locations, like CVS, Rite-Aid, and even Drugstore.com
Packaging: squeeze top, pop-open top, brush-wand applicator
My Rating: 5 out of 5 Kisses!

Formula:
I'm calling this a liquid-gel, but it's not a gel in the sense you're thinking. It does NOT dry hard like those cheapo hair colors you see around Halloween time. It dries soft, just like your hair!

Wear:
Washes out in the shower when you shampoo.

Coverage:
You control how intense or mild the color is; you can build the color up or blend it out easily. I have darker brown hair, although in the photos it's shown on the top parts of my hair which have some left over highlights; it still showed up well on my dark hair. It shows up better on blonde hair, which my 6 year old son has and he loved to use these.

Shade Info:
Currently available in the 4 shades shown in this post. I'd love to see a green and teal option in the future too, and I'm sure they are coming. The Hot 4 Pink shade had shimmer in it! And I've been told these glow under black light, but I haven't tried that out.

Cost/Availability:
$7 to $8 per box, depending where you shop (1 fl oz full size). Available at most drugstore locations, like CVS, Rite-Aid, and even Drugstore.com

Packaging:
Squeeze tube with pop-open top and a brush-wand applicator. The applicator reminds me of a jumbo mascara wand.

Splat Washables Review:
The Splat Washables are such an easy way to add color to your hair. They are so easy that my 6 year old son was able to color his hair without my help. He did red and blue after making his mohawk, saying it was his
"police mohawk", lol.

You can use the included brush-wand applicator, which is great for applying streaks or if you have shorter hair, but you can also use your hands. You'll for sure want to use your hands if you are going to do all-over color. Your hands will get messy, of course, but it washes off easily. You could use gloves too, if you prefer.

I was shocked to see the colors show up on my hair. Normally colors do not show up on dark hair unless you bleach/lighten first. Not the case with these; they will work on every hair color. Of course the colors weren't as intense on me as they were on my son's light blonde hair, but the point is I didn't need to bleach my hair out first in order to see color in my hair.

Another thing that really shocked me is that fact that this product did not dry hard! In all the photos the hair color is still semi-wet (I was too lazy to pull out my blow dryer), but I can promise you they dry just like your normal hair. That's a refreshing change from those cheapo gel colors you see around Halloween time, which dry rock hard and act as stiff hair gel.

Splat Washables are a wonderful option for anyone who likes to rock out on the weekends, but needs to look professional for their 9 to 5 job. It's great if you want to go colorful for a concert or other event. It's great for kids who are bugging you to dye their hair but you don't want to damage their hair by bleaching. It's also great for those thinking of getting their hair colored professionally and want to try out the look first. Fun to play with a mix of colors too! I loved how it looked when I braided the colors together! It's affordable and depending on how much you use, one tube will last a decent amount of time.

Overall, yes, I would recommend these!!

Now let me know what you think...
What do you think of these hair colors? Have you tried them or are them on your wish list? What color would you buy? Discuss in the comments below.

  1. Do they wash out if they get wet or do they just wash out with shampoo? I want to try it out but I'm just concerned if I go out with them and what if it suddenly rained. lol. :))

  2. I think I am going to have to try these out. I have dark brown hair and having to bleach over and over again is a pain.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I might be showing my age here, but this looks alot like the hair mascaras i used back in the 90's. They were great and i loved them, so its great to see them making a return :)

    ReplyDelete
  4. @ Joanne: I'm not sure of they hold up in rain or not, as I haven't been in that situation with these. I do know you need shampoo to fully get the color out. I would say if it rains bring an umbrella lol.

  5. wow...this product is amazing...great review :)

  6. As always, your posts makes me want these things lol

  7. nice pictures and a great review! color streaks and colored hair tips are very popular right now. i love the braid you did. That is something that would be very easy, but look amazing!

  8. These are great! I absolutely LOVE how you braided the colors together.

  9. I loove this brand.
I had my hair pink/blue with this brand for like the longest!!

Since you like dying your hair, you should totally check out Special Effects Hair Dye. AMAZING!

    ReplyDelete
  10. @ Danish: I have heard the Special Effects hair dye is a great at-home option. I've been going to the salon to get blue in my hair, but I wanted to cut costs in my budget due to my unplanned surgery, so I decided to do the blue at home. I use the same brand she uses in the salon and I would still go back to her if I want to keep up with the blue and need to re-bleach the re-growth (since there is a lot of regrowth right now, but I don't know if I want to rebleach yet). I use Pravana Chromasilk Vivids in Blue. You can just apply it straight from the tube, no need to mix with any developer. I pay about $8 for a tube, and use one tube each time I do my hair. Lasts about 4 to 6 weeks before I need to refresh the look. It still stays blue, but it goes to a lighter blue. I like it to be a navy electric blue but if you like the lighter shade too then the Pravana line is great; the color stays in forever!

  11. Omg, I need to check out that brand, I've never heard of it.
    Thank you :3
I've been wanting to dye my hair again, but it seems every brand I use just won't stick to my hair.

  12. OMG!!! I need you to help me. I have to have them!!! Please, email me at julia.r.wasielewska@onet.pl- maybe we can make an exchange of sth, but I really have to have them!

  13. The Splat Washables are such a great line, they hold to dark hair amazingly & their Splat Semi Perm line is super good aswell!
Can you do a review on the Splat Pink Fetish?
    X0X

    ReplyDelete
  14. @ Anonymous: I don't think I'll do a review on the Splat Pink Fetish because I don't like pink in my hair. I have navy/electric blue in my hair now (highlights on the underside) and I use a professional dye for that (I used to go to a salon but now I do it at home to save money, using the same dye). I would have to bleach my hair to get the pink from their regular line of colors to show up good. Sorry :(

    ReplyDelete
  15. When you say buildable you mean to make it vibrant on darker hair?? Also was your hair brushable? I hate the types of washable that you end up with hair that is a mess because you cant brush it afterwards!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Do I need bleach to dye my hair with Splat Washables? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  17. @ rock3199star: Not at all! I used the Splat Washables directly on my hair in the photos, and I have brown hair and it still showed up.

    ReplyDelete
  18. @ DanielleK: Yes, you can build the color. You can apply it more sheer/less bright or add to it (just allow the layers to dry in between). And yes, it's brushable. One of the big points I raved about in my review is the fact I didn't know it was in my hair, meaning it doesn't dry hard! :)

  19. the girl on the pink box is gorgeous :D

    ReplyDelete
  20. I have medium brown hair...so could I make the color as intense as the print ad, or will it just look faded since my hair is darker?

    ReplyDelete
  21. @ Anonymous: I have medium brown hair too, and darker brown hair on the underside. You can see how it looks in my hair in the photos. However, you can build the color intensity. I can't say it will be super bright and intense like on the box, but it's so affordable that it's worth the try because at least you don't have to bleach your hair and it washes right out with your next shampoo.

    ReplyDelete
  22. You said your son's hair is light blonde, does this product ever stain his hair? I have naturally blonde hair and don't want to have it turn out pink once I wash this out.

    ReplyDelete
  23. @ Anonymous: These completely wash out when you shampoo your hair without staining. He left it in his hair for 2 days before we washed it out, so if it was going to stain it would have, but it didn't. I just rinsed his hair, then shampoo'd it out and it was gone. You could always rinse your hair for a minute, then shampoo, rinse, and shampoo again if you're really concerned.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I have dark brown curly hair and i flat iorn it is the spalt wet and cause my hair to becaome curly after i put it on??? And does it come out if it rains or gets wet

    ReplyDelete
  25. @ Unknown: The product is a creamy liquid, so yes, it will be wet at first. I doubt it will be wet enough to re-curl your hair, but I have no idea as I don't have curly hair. I'd suggest giving it a try and seeing if you could even flat iron with the color in your hair, after the color is dry. I haven't tried that either.

As for will it come out if it rains, like I told someone else, I'm not sure of they hold up in rain or not, as I haven't been in that situation with these. I do know you need shampoo to fully get the color out though. I would say if it rains bring an umbrella.

    ReplyDelete
  26. did it stain your clothes a bedsheets?

    ReplyDelete
  27. @ Anonymous: No, didn't stain my clothes. My son slept in this and nothing stained his sheets.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I have dark brown hair, like the girl in the red color box, and i want to dye it that red. Will it come out that bright? i dont want it to be orangy or pinkish.

    ReplyDelete
  29. @ Anonymous: Keep in mind this is not a hair dye, but a hair color that washed out when you shampoo. It will show up red, if you get the red. If you want a longer lasting effect you may want to try Splat's actual hair dye, which comes with the bleach so you can get red in your dark hair.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Will this fade or stain your hair if you keep it in for a few days?

    ReplyDelete
  31. @ Anonymous: I haven't worn it in my hair for more than a day, but like I was saying in other comments, my son kept this in for 2 days and it did not stain his hair. It did fade a bit, but this is a 6 year old running around playing and such, putting hats on and all, so it's bound to fade that way. It's not meant to be long-term color though.

    ReplyDelete
  32. hi! ok i bought the red one yesterday and i always iron my hair after i shower cause i have keratin... should ilat iron my hair before i put it on or after it Dries please help!

    ReplyDelete
  33. @ Elle: I'm not 100% sure which you should do first, so I think it may be best to contact Splat directly to ask. However, I would recommend applying it to dried hair, after you flat iron. This hair color dries down like it is your own hair, so I don't see why you couldn't style it after it dries with hot tools (flat iron, in your case), but without personally having tried it yet I can't say for sure what is the best approach. Hopefully someone else can come on here and let me know what they've tried.

Regardless, this hair color is temporary (until your next shampoo), so if I were you I'd test it out at night, before bed, so if something doesn't work out you can always wash it out in the morning and try a different method.

Sorry I'm not of any more help. Please let me know if you have any other questions, and for sure come back and let me know what worked best for you! Good luck :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. How long will this last? Like how many washes??

    ReplyDelete
  35. @ Anonymous: They wash out when you shampoo. They are not their regular hair color line, these are the Washables which are meant for temporary use.

    ReplyDelete
  36. um yeah i did what you said over night but like i think i put too much because it stained my clothes and my skin and when i brush my hair the color goes on the brush. do you think its because i put too much. i let it dry but it wouldnt dry the first time so i just kept putting some on because i wanted it darker.

    ReplyDelete
  37. @ Elle: It's possible you put too much on, but without knowing how much you put on I can't tell what is too much and what isn't. I know when I apply it I will use the brush and then use my fingers to work it through. You can use a blow dryer to speed up the drying process if you want to add more color on top.

I know when my son had this in his hair, he left it in for two days - sleeping on it too - and nothing ever stained his clothes or skin, but we didn't use a ton of product either and it was completely dry before he went to sleep.

If it's getting on your brush it's pretty possible you put too much on it (assuming you're brushing your hair after it's completely dry). Since this is a washable formula, it shouldn't stain anything - as it should wash out. But again, I would contact Splat directly as I'm not an expert on this product.

    ReplyDelete
  38. can this product be used in africian amercian hair??

    ReplyDelete
  39. @ Anonymous: From what I know, this can be used on all hair types. You could contact Splat directly to get a 100% correct answer, but I don't see why this couldn't be used on all hair types.

You could look at this product as a colored mascara instead of a hair dye, because that's basically what it is.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Has any one try'd ironing there hair after applying and after the product drys?

    ReplyDelete
  41. I want to do this for the summer but would it come out with all of the Chlorine in the pool water?
Also, what color showed up best in your hair? I have about the same color hair as you and I want the best looking one...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Can you straighten your hair and let rain touch the color without it fading? and do you rinse it out after applying or leave it in?

    ReplyDelete
  43. i have. i ironed my hair when it was "dry" and it didnt do anything it just straightened like normally

    ReplyDelete
  44. @ Lauren: I wouldn't recommend swimming in this. Even though you need shampoo for this to come out, I still wouldn't trust it in a pool with all that water, which would likely wash some, if not a lot, of it out. As for what color showed up best in my hair, you can tell by the pics that they all showed up pretty nicely, and you can build the color, so you can't go wrong. It's not like their regular hair dyes where you need bleached hair in order for the color to show up. This color will show up on any hair - and of course the lighter your hair the more vibrant it will be.

@ Anonymous: You will shampoo it out, it's not meant to be a leave-in dye like their regular line. I have no idea how it reacts in rain; like I told a couple other people, if it rains bring an umbrella, lol.

@ Anonymous: Thanks for letting us know how it worked for you when you straightened your hair! I thought it would act normally but without trying it myself I wasn't sure. Thanks! :)

  45. I used these last night! I have fairly damaged, African American black hair and these showed up so well. the blue is my favorite now..xD <3

    ReplyDelete
  46. does anyone know for sure if it rains will it come out or if you get water on your hair i just wanted it in for 3 days and then wash it out

    ReplyDelete
  47. do you think it would come out if you were in a humid aread or sweaty?

    ReplyDelete
  48. @ Anonymous: No, I don't think so. Once it dries it's like part of your hair and you need to use shampoo to get it completely out.

    ReplyDelete
  49. i want to try the washable hair color but my mom is concerned it wont come out when i wash my hair. will it come out in the showr when i shampoo it

    ReplyDelete
  50. does this really come out when u shampoo ur hair

    ReplyDelete
  51. @ cameron1029: Yes, that's why it's called Splat Washables :) It's not a hair dye, it's temporary hair color. Think of it as mascara for your hair. It comes out with shampoo and you don't need to prep your hair (bleach it) in any way.

  52. My daughter used the totally red. I helped her to put it in her hair. We dropped on dot of dye on the floor and tried to wipe it up and it just kept smearing all over the floor. After we cleaned it up we kept getting pink off of everything in the bathroom that we didn't even touch. The pink was even in our nostrils. Every where was pink. I can't explain about it being in the air. It was a horrible experience. She had to wash it out of her hair the same night because the red kept getting all over her clothes and everything that came in contact with her hair after that. This product should be banned from the market.

    ReplyDelete
  53. @ Anonymous: Just because it was messy for you, doesn't mean it should be banned from the market. Honestly, I never had a single issue with these. My 6 year old son can apply this to his own hair and not make a mess.. especially not in his nostrils. Sometimes it's user error; sorry you had such a bad experience with this product. I've had nothing but good experiences with it.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Can you dip dye your hair with the splat washables?????

    ReplyDelete
  55. @ jenny: You're not dying your hair with the Splat Washables, so no, not necessarily. You can control where you apply the product - so you're only limited by your imagination.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I have a question for blond hair, when you use the washable, say I dyed it with the red washable dye, will it leave a hint of the red in my hair after the washout???

    ReplyDelete
  57. @ Bowanda92: My son has blonde hair and he used the red and the blue, left it in for two days, and it shampoo'd out without leaving behind any color. I did shampoo, rinse and repeat but I don't think it was even necessary; it was just habit for me to wash his hair like that.

    ReplyDelete
  58. It's in my hair right now! I dye my hair all the time (sadly) lol, but I can't wait to see how this purple comes out. The colour is very electric and I love that! I'll comment telling how it came out. XOXO, thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I tried this on a small section of my hair and it dried very hard. i followed the instructions. Did i do something wrong? i am not sure what went wrong

    ReplyDelete
  60. @ Anonymous: If your hair dried hard, you likely used too much on one area. It shouldn't dry hard at all; that's one of the good things about this product compared to those cheapo Halloween hair colors. Try using less... a little goes a long way... make sure it's spread through the area you're trying to cover.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I would love to try these but I just wanted to ask does it make your hair look dry or painted like other color sprays do ,I know that on the website they said that it would dry and look like your natural hair but with color ,so after it drys does in make it look like some dry paint streak ...sorry if I couldn't explain well

    ReplyDelete
  62. @ Anonymous: Once it's dry, seeing as how you don't glob it on, lol, it won't be hard. You can see in my photos - the one of the braid - it's basically dry there.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Im defenitely buying this...my mom said i could as long as it didnt look weird or crazy haha but unfortunately i must wait AT LEAST six weeks and Im going CRAZY I WANT IT SO BAD!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. I sant to try out tjis product but i am afriad Thatcher it is going to ruin my hair....is this true???

    ReplyDelete
  65. @ Anonymous: I don't see why it would ruin your hair? It's just a temp hair color, not a dye.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Would it work with curly hair that has been straightened? Or will the wet gel make my straightened hair curly again?

    ReplyDelete
  67. @ Anonymous: I honestly have no idea... you'd have to contact Splat to get full details.

    ReplyDelete
  68. do i need to wet my hair be fore i do this

    ReplyDelete
  69. @ lilly ann: No, you want to apply it to dry hair.

    ReplyDelete
  70. you see ive been asking my mom for them and she tought that you have to bleach my hair and i did she would never let me do it and now i know i dont have to thank you you were so helpfulll i might look on here more often but you should say weather or not it washses out without shampoo okay but thanks muah <3

  71. Isnt it funny how many people ask the same questions OVER AND OVER again? i dont think anyone is looking for the answer before asking.

My only problem with these is that i have red
hair so most of the colors would look wierd with it unless i did my whole head. about how much is in one tube? that doesnt seem to be specifyed and i have THICK hair... and there were no size comparative images to this tube of mysterious washable dye. XD

    ReplyDelete
  72. @ Anonymous: The size of each tube is 1.5 fl oz.

  73. I tried out the hot4pink and was loving the color. I did like a peek a boo style thing and it was fine but after an hour or so the color started flaking off. It was all over my navy blue sweater I was wearing and I was disappointed. I have long dark brown hair, and have never colored it, this product really sparked hopes for me until the flaking:( maybe I applied too many coats? Someone please help! I want to try the red and the blue but idk yet.

    ReplyDelete
  74. @ Anonymous: My guess is you used too much. I didn't have that problem, so that's why I would assume you used too much.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I was wondering approximately how long does it take for the colors to dry???

    ReplyDelete
  76. @ Anonymous: That's not really something I can answer. It will vary for everyone depending on how much you use. It really doesn't take all that long though, and you can use a blow dryer to speed up the process.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I tried this product. I tried the red only on my tips . I have long hair well everything I wore turned pink! Idk if I liked it is much. I felt like I had to be careful not to touch anything with my hair or it would turn pink. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  78. I have sum questions #1 i wanna know how much they are.s
And the #2 question is can it go on short hair and does it look good on short hair. Those r my questions..

    ReplyDelete
  79. @ kaliah: The price is listed in the post; $7 to $8 per box depending where you shop. And as far as will it look good on short hair, why wouldn't it? Hair length really shouldn't be a factor when it comes to hair color. If anything, the tubes of color will last longer of you have shorter hair.

    ReplyDelete
  80. do you know how long the hair color lasts? (does it expire?) just wondering... ;)

could you maybe put up a picture comparing the tube of hair dye to something...like a banana maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  83. To answer the last few questions.....

I have no idea how long the tube of color lasts. Contact Splat directly for that answer.

If the color is not dry in your hair and you get it on something, then yes, of course it will get on whatever you do. But if you're asking if your hair is dry and you touch something wet... well I have no clue. Never ran into that situation before.

As far as comparing the tube to a banana... yeah, not going to happen. I have many products of the same amount of ounces and they are all different sizes (not to mention bananas are all different sizes too, lol). It's 1.5 fl oz in size... which is printed on the box and on the product tube itself.

  84. I both splat washables and it worked as I expected. But it got all over my hands even though I wore gloves now when ever I touch my hair or brush my hair in the spot it's in it gets all over my brush and my hands and it's fully dry because I did it about 8 hours. Did this happen 2 u/ if it helps I used totally red and I have the same hair color as u

    ReplyDelete
  85. @ Jenny: I never brushed my hair after I used this, so I didn't have the same experience as you. If it does get on anything it should wash off easily with soap and water. Even when it got on my hands it washed right off.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Hi again well last night I want to bed and when I awoke the red hair color was all over my face, neck and back I got so frustrated that I washed it out did this happen to u???

    ReplyDelete
  87. @ Jenny: No, that didn't happen to me but I washed it out before I went to bed. My son, on the other hand, left it in for 2 days and didn't have any problems with it. Just keep in mind this is temporary hair color - not a dye - so it's not meant to be for longer term use. If you want longer results you'll have to dye your hair - otherwise, consider it just a one-day use type of thing.

  88. I got the purple. I let it dry completely in my hair, but as soon as I tried to comb it, the color came off all over my comb abd my hands. What a mess!

    ReplyDelete
  89. i used the purple one and whn i touched it it came out in my hand! is there a way to prevent tht??

    ReplyDelete
  90. @ Anonymous: When I apply it I always touch it with my fingers to make sure it really gets on my hair nice and evenly, so it does get on my hands but it washes off. Once it's dried it doesn't get on my hands.

  91. I think a blue streak would look awesome for my "Hunger Games Capital" look XD.Just what I need.

    ReplyDelete
  92. im so excited to get the electric blue to streak my hair 4 my dance.;)
would it be pefect 4 that?

    ReplyDelete
  93. I love these! I bought the red one at C.V.S and it was so easy to use! I'm 14 and I love the fact that it came with the wand! I didn't have to worry about it being permanent either. I did think that it was a little messy, because my hands and scalp would always be red when I was done. Other than that it looks awesome and it is a fun way for me to have some color to my hair(also dark brown). Totally worth the $7.49!

  94. I have strawberry blonde hair and i really want to use these but can not seem to convince my mom that it wont ruin my hair.. will it definitely wash out of my hair color??

  95. I bought splat washables and it did not work, you literaly brushed it out my daughter was so sad about it because she wanted to try a diffrent hair color and when we went to brush her hair all of the dye came out.

  96. My parents are very anti-bleach when it comes to hair. However, my dad is willing to let me try these, and these only. I want to know if I can make it last longer by using Tresemme's Color Protected shampoo, which my mom has for her hair, which she dies (With Loreal Kit), and that works. Please answer soon, we're going to the store to get the red today. Also, I want to say that I'm trying the red because I already have natural red highlights, so I think that this will make it pop! This is an experiment, but my parents will relent if it looks good.

  97. Hi. I got the red, but I'm a hygiene girl. i'd like to be able to take a shower before school tomorrow. Can I use "for color treated hair" shampoo?

  98. Worth the 7.99!!! 'Nuff said!!

  99. Is this stuff bright in dark hair...like my hair is almost black but its brown will it be bright in my hair? lol

    ReplyDelete
  100. To answer some recent questions....

No, using a color protect shampoo will not make these last longer. This is not a hair dye and it will wash out with ANY shampoo. It is not meant to be a long term hair color. Consider it a colored mascara for your hair and not a hair dye.

It will show up in dark hair but you'll likely need to layer it to make it brighter. Of course the lighter your hair the more vibrant it will show up, but considering you don't have to bleach your hair to get the color to show up says a lot and is a great temporary option.

Remember people, this is NOT a hair dye. You should consider this a 24 hour product to use (considering you shower daily).

  101. I just recently permed my grand-daughter's hair 3 days ago. i just came across your product at walmart. she had been wanting her hair color to be red. and we don't bleach our hair! its not clear...but perhaps you can clear up for me. question: The washables are semi-color and not permanent is that correct? I do understand that color washes out after shampoo. if so, how long to wait before i can use the "red" desired color for my grand-daughter's hair..she has dark brown natural color hair. also, is there a washable for perm/relax. thanks

    ReplyDelete
  102. @ Anonymous: This isn't my product; I just did a review for Splat on this product, but I can probably help with your question. The Splat Washables are not even a hair dye; they are pretty much meant for one day use, or until you wash your hair. However, I have no idea how this would work on perm/relaxed hair in regards to washing it out and such because you don't want to mess up what she had done on her hair. You'd have to contact Splat directly to get the best advice. But really, I would assume you could safely use this product because it's basically a colored mascara for your hair. Just apply, let it dry, wear it and wash it out when you shampoo. Just make sure you contact Splat directly as I'm really not an expert when it comes to that.

  103. I loveeeeeeeddddd this review!! Like seriously!!
It was very helpful because I found out obout this Splat Hair Colors about a week ago and I loved the fact that it washed out with shampoo. I had always imagined myself with like pink or blue hair like the girl from Aquamarine but I was always afraid of doing it because they say coloring your hair damages it. Now with washables I can do it without worrying about it. THANKYOU SO MUCH!!!!!! :D

  104. My daughter did her hair last night, using the red washable color and has washed shampooed her hair 4 times & its all pink! (her normal hair color is blonde) She has school tomorrow & will get sent home if we can't get it out, is there something i can use on her hair to get it out??!!

    ReplyDelete
  105. @ Anonymous: I honestly don't know what to suggest because it washes out with shampoo and if that doesn't work I'm not sure why? I haven't had any issues with it washing out and leaving behind any color. After you shampoo (for about 1 to 3 minutes as normal), try leaving it set for another 5 or 10 minutes before rinsing it out. Then shampoo again as normal, rinse and see if that works. If not, I really don't know what else to suggest but maybe try using Dawn dish washing detergent? I had a friend use that on her hair when she had gotten honey in it and it got it out perfectly.

  106. Ok thanks, Im going to have her try that, hopefully it works :/

  108. This stuff is amazing. I have fairly dark red hair (natural, not sure if that makes a difference or not with these things) and I was slightly worried that the colors would look gross when mixed with my hair color, but they worked just fine. I even used the pink and it actually seemed to stand out brighter than the blue. At least in my experience, you don't have to use a lot to get the color to stand out...you just have to make sure the wand is getting all the strands instead of just adding a thick top coat. I think that's where the problems are coming from for the people who have had the flecks coming off everywhere.

I originally used it sparingly last night and slept with it in to see if it would stain things as some people have said and I had no problems. Then I decided to add more today to see if it would be brighter and I think I added it too thick because now I'm having the "floating flecks of dye" everywhere getting in my eyes and nose. If you brush/shake the excess off then it stops, it's just unpleasant to do. Use sparingly and you shouldn't have this problem...if you do, take it as a sign you added too much, not a flaw with the product.

  111. I just bought this product, can't wait to try it. I bought it before seeing your review, lol. But, I must say, what a GREAT and descriptive review! I read all the questions too. I'm still going to try this and now I know the best way/amount to apply so it helped a bunch. Hopefully I'll put the right bit on and have as much great results as you. I only got the electric blue but wanted to say that I LOVE your "rainbow braid." Absolutely awesome :) Again, awesome review and thanks for taking the time to do so!!

  112. Okay, I've already purchased this AND used it.(I have it in my hair..) but I got the Purple Swag, and mine turned out NOTHING like yours. it's all clumpy(the parts in my hair) and REALLY messy. the stuff gets all over me and turns me purple... i quite honestly don't like it. my hair is very blonde too. i might try other colors though.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I left a comment on May 22nd. I finally tried this today. My hair is strawberry/blonde mix and I got electric blue. It showed up good. I first did a few strands, lightly of course, let it dry. Then, I went back over again lightly, just a little at a time. I LOVE it! I am not having any huge mess problems/flaking/clumping/hard as a board hair. I can tell it will come out easily though as when I do mess with it I have some blue left on my fingers but that's expected when you're dealing with a VERY temporary hair "mascara." (& that's why I purchased this, because it does come out easily! No commitments!) I really do think this product will give great results to anyone as long as you apply it right, don't go overboard or yeah, it will be flaking and clumpy and very messy. (Which has already been explained clearly already.) Thumbs up for this product from me! As little as needed to apply this stuff is going to last me a super long time too. LOVE IT :-)Only complaint: I wish I could have bought all the colors!

I'm going to try bleaching a bit now to see if it's just the texture of my hair (it's perfectly healthy lol). I was disappointed that my scalp was dyed red, though. :c

A: I don't suggest using this because this is not a dye and not a long-term solution to coloring your hair. This product is basically a one-day coloring solution. Without bleaching your hair you won't get vivid color, only tinted color. Maybe instead of using bleach you could add light blonde highlights to your hair and color those parts?

A: Yes, this is not a dye and will not harm your hair. It's basically a colored mascara for your hair. But for any questions like that you should contact Splat directly.

A: This is a one-day color solution, not a dye that is long lasting. It washes out with shampoo.

  135. I just bought this in purple, blue, and pink for my friends and I to put in our hair just to have cool highlights for a day. I was looking for Streekers hair color, but the people at the store suggested this, so will it do the same thing to our hair? I have medium brown hair, so mine shouldn't be a problem, but one of my friends has bleach blonde hair, so will it take more than one wash for her to get it out?

  141. Hi crystal I've always wanted to dye my hair but i am not ready for the commitment and also is this a mom trusted product?

    ReplyDelete
  142. @ Christina Dew: As a mom myself, I can say this is a mom trusted product. I've used it on myself and my son (who is 7 now, but was 6 at the time). He even used it on himself. I have darker brown hair, but he has light blonde hair and it washed right out without leaving behind any color. It's an easy way to see if you'd even like color in your hair. Start off with some highlights on the underside of your hair (which can be hidden if needed) and go out for the day, see how you feel. Then go bolder with highlights all over, or just in the front. Then just have fun with it :)

    ReplyDelete
  147. @ Anonymous: You can call Splat directly to get the best answers, as I don't know if this is vegetable based or not.

I never had problems with staining except when my son left it in his hair for more than a day, and even then it will rinse out after a few days (fading more and more after each shampoo). He has very blonde hair and it doesn't stain unless he leaves it in for a very long time.

    ReplyDelete
  148. You do need to bleach if you have black hair, but if you have dark brown hair you dont have to.I had electric blue and I have black hair and it did'nt show up, so I guess I have to light up (bleach) my hair to make the color show up.

    ReplyDelete
  149. @ Anonymous: This product is a temporary (one-day) color, so you should NOT bleach your hair to use this product. If you have black hair you need to build the color up (allowing it to dry between layers). Bleaching your hair for a temporary hair color is unnecessary and very damaging; if you want to do that you could just add lighter color highlights (much-less damaging than bleaching it), and go that way. But please, do NOT bleach your hair to use this particular product. If you tried layering it and it doesn't show up, then just try another product (like Anastasia's Brow & Hair Powder - which had amazing pigmentation). But moral of the story: don't damage your hair for a product meant to be used for one day.

    ReplyDelete
  150. I am about to do my hair with it and i was wondering if after it drys ,if i straighten is it safe and will it make it stiff?

    ReplyDelete
  151. @ Anonymous: As I've replied before to other comments, I'm not sure if you can use heat styling products after you apply this. I would contact Splat directly with that question (you can call the number on the box for fastest response most likely). If you want to just go for it, do a test strip somewhere on the underside of your hair.

But to answer your other question, no, it doesn't dry stiff. It dries down to your natural hair texture, allowing flexibility and movement with it.

  154. I love the idea of coloring my hair and being able to wash it out.. My mom doesn't let me dye my hair because she thinks it will ruin my hair or like damage it. Will this product make my hair go all wacko after i wash it out? Or will it damage my hair ??

    ReplyDelete
  155. @ Face Book: This didn't damage my hair or my son's hair. I guess the biggest risk you have is having your hair dry out a bit, which you could reverse using a hair mask if that happens. It washes out in 1 shampoo -- although depending on how much you use and how porous your hair is, you may need more than one shampoo to get all the color out.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Is there another way to set the color on your hair other than hairspray?

    ReplyDelete
  157. @ Anonymous: You don't have to set this product with hair spray if you don't want to. If you do use a hairspray get a light, flexible hold so your hair doesn't get hard or crunchy.

  166. I've purchased the Totally Red for Halloween. I want to only do the tips of my long golden hair, but then I want to use a wand to curl my hair after it's colored. Do you think it will still curl?

    ReplyDelete
  167. @ AKF: I honestly haven't tried to curl my hair or apply any heat to my hair (other than a blow dryer) after using these, so from personal experience I can't say if they would curl. However, I would recommend applying this and waiting a good amount of time before curling. Give the color time to set and fully dry, and set it with hair spray (a flexible hair spray so you can still go in and style it). I'd wait at least 30 minutes after applying this - even an hour if you have the time - just to be sure, then try it. Of course you don't want to wait until Halloween to try it out, so I'd recommend doing a test run a few days ahead of time, or even the night before - that way you can wash out any mistakes.

  168. I've looked through all the comments before deciding to post this, but none have addressed the allergy information. I'm a bit worried myself about it, but as your personal opinion, would you say I need to worry?

    ReplyDelete
  169. @ Anonymous: You can certainly do a patch test if you're worried, but I can say that I'm allergic to all hair dye and I have zero reaction when I use this. If you've had issues in the past then I'd say you should do a patch test or look at ingredients to see if there is anything specific you know you're allergic to, otherwise, because it's a temporary color I'd say this is pretty safe. Think of it as a colored mascara for your hair rather than a hair dye product. I hope that helps!
