My MUST-HAVE Skincare at the moment - adult ACNE PRONE skin!

Hello, Beautiful!

This will be a detailed post on my current skincare, which is for my adult acne prone skin. I will tell you my situation, and what is working for me at the moment. It's not the only skincare I use, after all I am a beauty blogger and I test out a lot of products, but these are my must-haves!

I'll also list all the products at the end of this post with links to where you can purchase them if you're interested.

Never in my life did I think I'd be dealing with acne in my 30's! I'm 31 years old and struggle with hormonal acne due to a hormonal imbalance (for those that aren't aware, I have Cushing's Syndrome). In my teens I had the occasional pimple here and there but my skin was pretty clear for the most part, and that continued into my early 20's. Then everything changed when I was 23. Since then I've been dealing with acne.

If you've been a long time reader of my blog, or follow my Instagram, then you've seen many before & after pics of my skin (usually showing the coverage of foundations). It's no secret I have problematic skin. I'm not ashamed, embarrassed or afraid to post my before photos. Why? Because acne effects so many people, of all ages, and it's very common. Nobody should be ashamed, embarrassed or afraid to be seen with less than perfect skin. I often get asked "well then why do you wear makeup?" and it's simple: because I want to! I have always enjoyed wearing makeup, and now that my skin is problematic it becomes even more fun because I can turn my flawed skin into flawless skin with the power of makeup. If you don't think that's fun to do on yourself, then maybe we look at fun in different ways. I'm just fascinated with the power of makeup!

Even though I am not ashamed of my bad skin, I'm still taking steps to improve it (there is only so much I can control; the rest is up to my hormones). Throughout the past 8 years of daily acne I've tried countless acne products from various brands. I learned very early on that I am allergic to benzoyl peroxide, so I have to avoid all products that contain that ingredient or I'm going to cause a lot more problems (hives, swelling, redness, puffiness and pain).

Truthfully, nothing has fully worked where my skin is 100% clear. I still get acne, and will continue to get acne so long as my hormonal imbalance is still in full effect. It's just part of the deal when you have a hormonal imbalance. BUT, I can tell you what has been working for me in terms of keeping my skin as clear as possible.

It all started by trying, yet again, another 30-day acne kit. This time I chose the Dr. Dennis Gross line because I know I love the Alpha-Beta Peel, and there was a moisturizer I used that I really loved as well. Little did I know this would be be THE kit to change my skin for the better.

In the kit you receive four products: a foaming cleanser, a moisturizer, acne treatment pads, and an overnight mask. I am incredibly lazy when it comes to skincare but I still tried to follow the usage for the products every single day. I did miss a day or two here or there, but overall I did a good job of using it as directed.

I used the cleanser 1 to 2 times a day. If I had makeup on I would use Philosophy's Purity Made Simple cleanser first, to get off all my makeup (including eye makeup; I love that cleanser for that purpose) and then follow up with the Dr. Dennis Gross cleanser. I really like the cleanser because it's a foam and does a great job at cleaning out my pores.

I don't recommend using the Dr. Dennis Gross foaming cleanser for makeup removal, especially if you're like me and use long-wearing products; it just doesn't break it down all that easily and you'll waste more cleanser than needed. The Philosophy Purity Made Simple cleanser is the perfect makeup remover. It melts it all down, even eye makeup (and doesn't irritate my eyes at all), leaving no trace of makeup behind.

I used the acne pads every day, twice a day, for 10 days (as directed), then once a day every other day. Honestly, these pads are saturated so I felt like a single use per pad was a waste. In the kit each pad comes in individual foil packets, so what I did was use one side in the morning, put it back in the foil packet, and use the other side at night. Just make sure you don't leave the foil packet open (so it doesn't dry out). I just folded the top over and put something on top that would keep it from unfolding. You could also use a hair clip, paper clip or binder clip to keep it closed. So I was able to get double the usage from the acne pads in the kit just by using them twice, making sure to use one side for morning and one side for night. The full size acne pads come in a jar, not foil packets, so if you want to re-use them (which I do 99% of the time), I left the foil seal half on (the seal that you open when you first get the product; just leave part of it on). Then I would use one side of the pad, and the clean side would always be the side that was face down. I would then use the clean side at night, or the next time I used the pads. This saves a lot of money, since you're getting double the use!

The moisturizer I used mostly just in the morning. The mask that is in the kit is meant to be used as night, so I don't think they specify using the moisturizer at night. I know I didn't use the moisturizer at night except for maybe 2 or 3 times. The moisturizer is wonderful! It has perfect hydration, absorbs nicely, and wears great under makeup too!

The mask was a surprise to me, because I didn't think it was something you wear overnight. I thought it would be just your typical mask that you wash off after 20 or 30 minutes (can you tell I didn't do much reading about this kit before buying it, other than making sure it didn't have benzoyl peroxide in it). And honestly, I kept forgetting to use it. I slept with it maybe 3 times total. The rest of the product I used on a friend who was suffering from really bad back acne; he used it maybe 3 times and then the product was all gone. But, from the few times I used it, and seeing my friends results too, I can say it's a pretty effective mask. When you apply it, it becomes invisible (unless you apply way too thick of a layer) and it dries down, so you don't have to worry about it getting all over your pillow. Then just wash it off in the morning. They say you can apply a very thin layer in the morning and use as a mattifying moisturizer/primer, but I never did that so I can't speak on that option.

After I ran out of the kit, I re-purchased the cleanser, acne pads and the moisturizer. The moisturizer is the most expensive product that I re-purchased; it's $78, but I'm willing to spend the money if it works... and this moisturizer works at both moisturizing and helping prevent acne. At first I had only purchased the cleanser and acne pads, which was good but I wasn't getting the same results as I did when I used the kit. I knew the moisturizer had to be the missing key to my skin success, and it turned out that was the one product that made me start seeing the better results that I expected to see from when I used the 30 day kit.

In addition to the Dr. Dennis Gross products, there are a few face masks I enjoy using weekly.

One is a very special mask from Valley Green Naturals - their Dead Sea Mineral Mud Masque! I'm a mask addict, and this mask seriously is one of the BEST for clearing out your pores. If you have congested skin, this mask will take care of it! I've already written a full review on this mask, so I won't go into too much detail in this post - CLICK HERE if you want to read up about it and see pics of the mask.

I also love the Anokha Red Sandalwood and Neem Clarifying Facial Mask, which I've also previously written a full blog post on. CLICK HERE to read that post and see pics.

And a newer addition is the Kate Somerville EradiKate Mask. I already love the Kate Somerville EradiKate spot treatment - which is also one of the must-have skincare products at the moment.... and actually of all time. I've used this for years and I swear by it. I just can be lazy and forget I have it, but I swear it works! The mask does great things too, and feels good on your face. When you first apply the mask to your face it has that light pink tone that the EradiKate treatment has, and is a creamy consistency. Soon after it starts to foam up and that's the part that feels good. To me, it feels like a mini massage of oxygen bubbles on your face. If you've tried the Bliss Oxygen Mask, then this is a similar feeling. You only leave the EradiKate Mask on up to 10 minutes, so it's an easy and quick treatment. It washes off really easily too.

I know everyone's skin is different, so what works for me may not work for you, but I can say that these Dr. Dennis Gross products are the main ones that have changed my skin for the better. I do recommend trying them, since I have had such great success. I would recommend not going right in and purchasing the full sizes. Instead, go with their 30 day kit because the investment is low and you will see results if it's something that will work for you.

The three face masks I mentioned are great additions to any skincare routine! And the EradiKate spot treatment is great to use on active acne. I use it as an overnight spot treatment and wake up with less inflamed, less red, acne and some spots that were coming up have calmed back down completely.

Kate Somerville DermalQuench Liquid Lift - pics, review

Hello, Beautiful!

This is a product I tried out when it originally launched on QVC back in January 2012. I was really excited about this because it looked like an innovated product that would yield great results. It was a bit pricey (I believe it was specially priced at around $80, but it retails now for $95), but I figured I could always return it if it truly didn't work out. Well, I did end up returning it after trying it out for almost 4 weeks straight. As fun as it was to use, and as good as it felt on my skin, this just didn't do anything to warrant the price. Maybe my skin is too young (I'm 28) to see any results, so it's possible someone with more mature skin could love this. For me, it just didn't work. Regardless, check out the pics and full review below.

Kate Somerville DermalQuench Liquid Lift Review:
This is a fun product to use that feels great on your skin, that part alone would make me keep this if it wasn't $95, but the fact it didn't really do anything for my skin meant I didn't have the budget to keep an almost $100 product.

Yes, it did feel great going on. You shake it up and spray lines on your face, then massage in. It absorbs quickly, leaving behind no sticky residue and feels really refreshing. My skin felt great and had a slightly more radiant look to it (but a face mask and/or scrub can do that too for me).

I took before and after photos to see if I could see any difference at all and unfortantely I didn't see any difference. I zoomed into them and studied them side-by-side, hoping I could find even one example of the immediate results this claims (and what was presented on-air on QVC). I couldn't see one difference on my skin. Not one. I also did after pics after the almost 4 weeks of use, and still no difference in my skin.

Now that's not to say that you won't see a difference. There were some great before and after's during the QVC presentation --- of course all on more mature skin than mine. I say if you're younger (20's or younger) this isn't a product you need to buy. There are cheaper options out there to get an instant glow. However, if you have more mature skin then you may love this and find it to be a great skincare tool.

Overall, I wish it were cheaper because I really did enjoy using this but it just doesn't give me any results. I'd only recommend this to those in their late 30's and up.

MALLY Volumizing Mascara
  • DESCRIPTION: Despite a nonstop schedule filled with red-carpet premiers, music videos and celebrity photo shoots, Mally Roncal always finds time to share her expert makeup tips and positive energy with QVC viewers. In fact, the Q was the first to carry her beloved line of cosmetics. We know you'll adore this volumizing mascara's unique formula infused with natural waxes and carefully chosen powders that creates the look of full, luxurious lashes and has been a QVC Customer Choice Award winner for two consecutive years. The plush brush works with the powders to help thicken lashes without clumping, giving you gorgeous volume that lasts.
  • MORE INFO: Combines Mally's favorite Italian mascara, a special powder from the Orient and a French-inspired brush. The plush brush works with the powders in the formula to help thicken lashes without clumping, giving your lashes a boost that lasts. You'll get evenly coated lashes that appear longer but feel lightweight, and it won't flake on your cheeks.
  • FUN FACT: Fans of this mascara include celebrities from the film, TV and music industries.
  • TO USE: Apply to lashes from base to tip. For luminous lashes, apply one coat, let dry, and than apply a second coat. Repeat until you've got the lash look you love.
  • MY THOUGHTS: This mascara is my go-to mascara of choice! I didn't open this tube for photos because I've already photographed this in the past and I plan to keep this tube as another back-up (currently making it my 3rd un-opened tube of this mascara, which I keep in my mascara makeup drawer). This is almost the only mascara I use (I still like Benefit's They're Real! Mascara and MUFE Smoky Lash Mascara). This works great, although I'll be honest and say I've gotten a bad tube twice (one where the wand scrapper thing didn't work and it came out in huge chunks and another where the formula was very dry). But when it's good, it's really good. I love this mascara!
  • FULL SIZED: 0.39 fl oz @ $20.00
  • SIZE I RECEIVED: 0.39 fl oz (I received a FULL SIZED tube)
  • SAMPLE VALUE: $20.00

TARTE Aqua-Gel Eyeliner in Navy
  • DESCRIPTION: Infused with ultra-rich pigments by way of hydrous pigmentation technology, this revolutionary vitamin-infused aqua-gel eyeliner makes defining your eyes a cinch. The formula glides on like pure silk and won't move throughout your busy day.
  • MORE INFO: A revolutionary way to deliver color. Rich color pigments are suspended in 50% water in this formula to soothe and soften the skin. Pure water, aloe leaf extract and cucumber work together to hydrate and retain moisture balance around the delicate eye area.
  • MORE INFO: Define and contour without dragging, pulling, or skipping. The high-pigment concentration and staying power of a gel pot is now available in an effortless pencil. No brush required!
  • TO USE: Twist up the wand very slightly, and glide across the entire lash line for richly and precisely defined eyes. Due to the creamy texture of this formula, do not over advance the tip to prevent breakage. A little is all you need to achieve rich color intensity. This liner is not intended for the inner rim.
  • MY THOUGHTS: I've always wanted to try one of these liners, so it was nice to receive a full sized version in my Test Tube. There are four shades going around in all the test tubes, all are colors -- there is a green, teal, plum, and navy. I really wanted the navy and I was pleasantly surprised to open my test tube and find the navy blue shade! That's where my excitement ended. I love the color; it's dark enough to wear during the day and the blue really brightens and brings out my brown eyes. But the formula wasn't as creamy as I was hoping for. It was a bit stiff and didn't go on as nice as I was expecting. Still, it's better than others I've tried and it's a nice liner to have. Although I would not buy another.
  • FULL SIZED: 0.003 oz @ $18.00
  • SIZE I RECEIVED: 0.003 oz (I received a FULL SIZED liner)
  • SAMPLE VALUE: $18.00

KATE SOMERVILLE ExfoliKate
  • DESCRIPTION: Get Kate's signature facial at home! ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment clarifies and polishes skin to reveal a glowing, healthy-looking complexion after just one treatment.
  • MORE INFO: Scrubbing microbeads and three powerful P's -- Papaya, Pineapple and Pumpkin Enzymes -- are designed to effectively clean pores. Salicylic acid is designed to balance hydration, without over-drying. Aloe vera, honey, and vitamin E smooth and soften skin. Rosewood and cinnamon extracts are combined in an effort to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
  • DID YOU KNOW: Clinical results show that 75% of users reported a reduction in skin roughness and dullness and 88% said they had smoother skin and improved texture.
  • TO USE: Use once or twice each week, morning or evening, to keep skin radiant. Apply a thin, even layer to a clean, wet face, massaging in a circular motion for 30 seconds. Leave on for up to two minutes. Rinse off with warm water and gently pat dry. This product may cause the skint o flush slightly for a short time. For sensitive skin, leave on for less than one minute.
  • MY THOUGHTS: I've had small sample packets of this in the past, and I've used and sort of liked it. I didn't get a good enough test drive of the formula, so it's nice to have a larger sample size to test out. Although I did just get the Kate Somerville Blemish Banisher Kit from Sephora, which has the same deluxe sample size of the ExfoliKate Acne Clearing Exfoliating Treatment, which is basically the same thing but for acne prone skin. I plan to alternate between both sample tubes, using the original version when my skin is behaving and using the acne version when my skin is breaking out. I've used the original version (the one in this test tube) and this time around I LOVED it. My skin was baby butt soft in minutes!
  • FULL SIZED: 0.5 fl oz @ $19.00 (a full sized tube is actually 2 oz @ $85, but Sephora sells a 0.5 fl oz size)
  • SIZE I RECEIVED: 0.5 fl oz
  • SAMPLE VALUE: $19.00

FIRST AID BEAUTY Ultra Repair Cream Intense Therapy
  • DESCRIPTION: FAB Ultra Repair Cream provides temporary relief and visible improvement for severely dry or distressed skin. The luxuriously rich, non-greasy cream has a whipped texture that is packed with ingredients to hydrate, heal and protect the skin. It absorbs with exceptional penetration, leaving behind a smooth, soft finish.
  • MORE INFO: This formula with colloidal oatmeal, shea butter, allantoin and ceramides hydrates, calms and soothes skin and temporarily relieves minor skin irritation and itching due to eczema and other conditions. It can be used on the face and all over the body.
  • MORE INFO: The regular application of antioxidants helps protect the skin from the damaging effects of the environment. FAB Antioxidant Booster is a blend of powerful antioxidants known to botanical science, including licorice root, feverfew and white tea extracts, to combat free radical damage.
  • MORE INFO: At FAB, the packaging says what the products do, and the products do what they say. FAB keeps the packaging simple, assuring customers that resources are spent on what goes into, and not onto, the bottle.
  • DID YOU KNOW: Colloidal oatmeal is FDA-approved for the treatment of eczema.
  • TO USE: Apply to skin as needed (face and/or body).
  • MY THOUGHTS: The First Aid Beauty brand is a brand I've always wanted to try out, but for some reason never have. I don't plan to use this on my face, because I have so many moisturizers I'm currently trying to rotate between, but I've used this on my body. It melts into your skin very quickly, which was impressive, but I didn't think it had the moisture level I was expecting. It's good, don't get me wrong, but I think I was expecting something more. In all fairness, my skin is super dry at the moment; recovering from surgery has dried out my skin like you wouldn't believe, plus the cold winter air doesn't help. Nothing seems to do a perfect job at the moment, but this did a good job. My husband, however, has taken this tube and uses it on his face. He has some mild eczema and sensitive skin; this cream is a near perfect match for him!
  • FULL SIZED: 2 fl oz @ $12.00 (a full sized jar is 6 oz @ $28, but Sephora sells a 2 of tube)
  • SIZE I RECEIVED: 2 fl oz
  • SAMPLE VALUE: $12.00

PHILOSOPHY Field Of Flowers Perfumed Body Lotion and Perfume Shampoo, Shower Gel & Bubble Bath
  • DESCRIPTION: Philosophy has captured the essence of a field of flowers and infused it into its 3-in-1 shampoo, shower gel & bubble bath formula and into it's ultra-rich, hydrating body lotion.
  • MORE INFO: Infused with the fresh floral scent of peony. The "philosophy" behind this product is "stop and smell the flowers". A flower is the embodiment of everything that is right and beautiful in this world. The luxurious body lotion contains shea butter, and olive fruit and macadamia seed oils to moisten, soothe and soften dry skin so it feels silky smooth and extremely touchable.
  • FUN FACT: In Chinese medicine, the peony was often used for its soothing properties, but the flower could only be picked at night because of superstition.
  • TO USE: Shower Gel: Apply to wet body or scalp, lather, rinse, repeat. If using as a bubble bath, drizzle a generous amount under running water and enjoy. Lotion: Apply a generous amount to skin with fingertips and massage in gently with circular motion.
  • MY THOUGHTS: I am not a floral scent type of person, so these are not my cup of tea at all. But I have to admit the scent isn't too strong or over powering. It's light and fresh, and certainly does remind me of a field of flowers, but it's not for me. These are going to my grandmom.
  • FULL SIZED: 16 fl oz @ $16.00 (shower gel); 16 fl oz @ $24.00 (lotion)
  • SIZE I RECEIVED: 1 fl oz each bottle
  • SAMPLE VALUE: $1.00 (shower gel); $1.50 (lotion)

  • MY THOUGHTS: I'm curious about this, but not that curious. I will likely try it, but I will be honest and say it will be awhile before I give this a try. I'm in a routine with my hair, especially since I dye parts of my hair navy blue, so I'm really picky right now. I'm not as open to testing other shampoos at the moment. I know my hair won't have blue in it forever (at some point I plan to go back to my natural color all over), so I'll give this a try at that time.
  • FULL SIZED: 8 fl oz @ $39.00 for BOTH the shampoo & conditioner, making it $19.50
  • SIZE I RECEIVED: 2 fl oz
  • SAMPLE VALUE: $4.88
