My MUST-HAVE Skincare at the moment - adult ACNE PRONE skin!

Hello, Beautiful!

This will be a detailed post on my current skincare, which is for my adult acne prone skin. I will tell you my situation, and what is working for me at the moment. It's not the only skincare I use, after all I am a beauty blogger and I test out a lot of products, but these are my must-haves!

I'll also list all the products at the end of this post with links to where you can purchase them if you're interested.

Never in my life did I think I'd be dealing with acne in my 30's! I'm 31 years old and struggle with hormonal acne due to a hormonal imbalance (for those that aren't aware, I have Cushing's Syndrome). In my teens I had the occasional pimple here and there but my skin was pretty clear for the most part, and that continued into my early 20's. Then everything changed when I was 23. Since then I've been dealing with acne.

If you've been a long time reader of my blog, or follow my Instagram, then you've seen many before & after pics of my skin (usually showing the coverage of foundations). It's no secret I have problematic skin. I'm not ashamed, embarrassed or afraid to post my before photos. Why? Because acne effects so many people, of all ages, and it's very common. Nobody should be ashamed, embarrassed or afraid to be seen with less than perfect skin. I often get asked "well then why do you wear makeup?" and it's simple: because I want to! I have always enjoyed wearing makeup, and now that my skin is problematic it becomes even more fun because I can turn my flawed skin into flawless skin with the power of makeup. If you don't think that's fun to do on yourself, then maybe we look at fun in different ways. I'm just fascinated with the power of makeup!

Even though I am not ashamed of my bad skin, I'm still taking steps to improve it (there is only so much I can control; the rest is up to my hormones). Throughout the past 8 years of daily acne I've tried countless acne products from various brands. I learned very early on that I am allergic to benzoyl peroxide, so I have to avoid all products that contain that ingredient or I'm going to cause a lot more problems (hives, swelling, redness, puffiness and pain).

Truthfully, nothing has fully worked where my skin is 100% clear. I still get acne, and will continue to get acne so long as my hormonal imbalance is still in full effect. It's just part of the deal when you have a hormonal imbalance. BUT, I can tell you what has been working for me in terms of keeping my skin as clear as possible.

It all started by trying, yet again, another 30-day acne kit. This time I chose the Dr. Dennis Gross line because I know I love the Alpha-Beta Peel, and there was a moisturizer I used that I really loved as well. Little did I know this would be be THE kit to change my skin for the better.

In the kit you receive four products: a foaming cleanser, a moisturizer, acne treatment pads, and an overnight mask. I am incredibly lazy when it comes to skincare but I still tried to follow the usage for the products every single day. I did miss a day or two here or there, but overall I did a good job of using it as directed.

I used the cleanser 1 to 2 times a day. If I had makeup on I would use Philosophy's Purity Made Simple cleanser first, to get off all my makeup (including eye makeup; I love that cleanser for that purpose) and then follow up with the Dr. Dennis Gross cleanser. I really like the cleanser because it's a foam and does a great job at cleaning out my pores.

I don't recommend using the Dr. Dennis Gross foaming cleanser for makeup removal, especially if you're like me and use long-wearing products; it just doesn't break it down all that easily and you'll waste more cleanser than needed. The Philosophy Purity Made Simple cleanser is the perfect makeup remover. It melts it all down, even eye makeup (and doesn't irritate my eyes at all), leaving no trace of makeup behind.

I used the acne pads every day, twice a day, for 10 days (as directed), then once a day every other day. Honestly, these pads are saturated so I felt like a single use per pad was a waste. In the kit each pad comes in individual foil packets, so what I did was use one side in the morning, put it back in the foil packet, and use the other side at night. Just make sure you don't leave the foil packet open (so it doesn't dry out). I just folded the top over and put something on top that would keep it from unfolding. You could also use a hair clip, paper clip or binder clip to keep it closed. So I was able to get double the usage from the acne pads in the kit just by using them twice, making sure to use one side for morning and one side for night. The full size acne pads come in a jar, not foil packets, so if you want to re-use them (which I do 99% of the time), I left the foil seal half on (the seal that you open when you first get the product; just leave part of it on). Then I would use one side of the pad, and the clean side would always be the side that was face down. I would then use the clean side at night, or the next time I used the pads. This saves a lot of money, since you're getting double the use!

The moisturizer I used mostly just in the morning. The mask that is in the kit is meant to be used as night, so I don't think they specify using the moisturizer at night. I know I didn't use the moisturizer at night except for maybe 2 or 3 times. The moisturizer is wonderful! It has perfect hydration, absorbs nicely, and wears great under makeup too!

The mask was a surprise to me, because I didn't think it was something you wear overnight. I thought it would be just your typical mask that you wash off after 20 or 30 minutes (can you tell I didn't do much reading about this kit before buying it, other than making sure it didn't have benzoyl peroxide in it). And honestly, I kept forgetting to use it. I slept with it maybe 3 times total. The rest of the product I used on a friend who was suffering from really bad back acne; he used it maybe 3 times and then the product was all gone. But, from the few times I used it, and seeing my friends results too, I can say it's a pretty effective mask. When you apply it, it becomes invisible (unless you apply way too thick of a layer) and it dries down, so you don't have to worry about it getting all over your pillow. Then just wash it off in the morning. They say you can apply a very thin layer in the morning and use as a mattifying moisturizer/primer, but I never did that so I can't speak on that option.

After I ran out of the kit, I re-purchased the cleanser, acne pads and the moisturizer. The moisturizer is the most expensive product that I re-purchased; it's $78, but I'm willing to spend the money if it works... and this moisturizer works at both moisturizing and helping prevent acne. At first I had only purchased the cleanser and acne pads, which was good but I wasn't getting the same results as I did when I used the kit. I knew the moisturizer had to be the missing key to my skin success, and it turned out that was the one product that made me start seeing the better results that I expected to see from when I used the 30 day kit.

In addition to the Dr. Dennis Gross products, there are a few face masks I enjoy using weekly.

One is a very special mask from Valley Green Naturals - their Dead Sea Mineral Mud Masque! I'm a mask addict, and this mask seriously is one of the BEST for clearing out your pores. If you have congested skin, this mask will take care of it! I've already written a full review on this mask, so I won't go into too much detail in this post - CLICK HERE if you want to read up about it and see pics of the mask.

I also love the Anokha Red Sandalwood and Neem Clarifying Facial Mask, which I've also previously written a full blog post on. CLICK HERE to read that post and see pics.

And a newer addition is the Kate Somerville EradiKate Mask. I already love the Kate Somerville EradiKate spot treatment - which is also one of the must-have skincare products at the moment.... and actually of all time. I've used this for years and I swear by it. I just can be lazy and forget I have it, but I swear it works! The mask does great things too, and feels good on your face. When you first apply the mask to your face it has that light pink tone that the EradiKate treatment has, and is a creamy consistency. Soon after it starts to foam up and that's the part that feels good. To me, it feels like a mini massage of oxygen bubbles on your face. If you've tried the Bliss Oxygen Mask, then this is a similar feeling. You only leave the EradiKate Mask on up to 10 minutes, so it's an easy and quick treatment. It washes off really easily too.

I know everyone's skin is different, so what works for me may not work for you, but I can say that these Dr. Dennis Gross products are the main ones that have changed my skin for the better. I do recommend trying them, since I have had such great success. I would recommend not going right in and purchasing the full sizes. Instead, go with their 30 day kit because the investment is low and you will see results if it's something that will work for you.

The three face masks I mentioned are great additions to any skincare routine! And the EradiKate spot treatment is great to use on active acne. I use it as an overnight spot treatment and wake up with less inflamed, less red, acne and some spots that were coming up have calmed back down completely.

Hello, Beautiful!

If you've followed my blog for the past several months, then you may have noticed that I've been raving about several Anokha Skin Care products. I'll list my other Anokha Skin Care reviews below if you want to check them out, but in this post it's all about their Amla Skin Brightening Lotion. Check out all the product info, along with my full review, after the pics!

Anokha Skin Care Amla Skin Brightening Lotion Info & Review:
Cost/Availability: $65.00 (1.7 fl oz full size). Available on the Anokha Skin Care website, at Dermstore, and everywhere else Anokha Skin Care is sold; click here for retailers.
My Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Kisses

Product Info...

This is their best selling product! The formula has been improved and the packaging has been changed to an airless bottle, which flows smoothly. If you've had the original and loved it, you'll go crazy for it now.

Hydrates skin, while lightening hyper pigmentation to promote a clear, radiant complexion. This unique lotion combines amla fruit with extracts of daisy, mango seed butter, licorice root, and hibiscus to gently brighten the skin while reducing uneven skin tone.  The result is smooth, supple, even-toned skin.

Best results will be seen in 6 to 8 weeks. Suitable for all skin types.

To Use: Apply a small amount of lotion to damp skin after cleansing and toning. Use twice daily.

My Review...

If I already love everything I've tried from this brand, then why not try their best selling product?! This is the perfect product for anyone with hyper pigmentation (hello, me!) who want to even out their skin tone.

This could be a replacement for your moisturizer, or depending on your skin type, used under your moisturizer. I look at this as more of a treatment product rather than a moisturizer. In the morning, I will wash/scrub my face, then tone, then apply my serum that I'm currently using (which at the moment is L'Oreal's Youth Code Texture Perfector Serum), then I'll apply this product, and finally, I'll apply my moisturizer, followed by my eye cream. At night I just do basically the same thing. Keep in mind my skin has been very combo to dry, so the extra moisture is what my skin needs at the moment, which is the only reason I apply a moisturizer on top - but you certainly could skip your moisturizer, especially if you have oily skin. This will hydrate your skin, so try it both ways and see what you prefer. Some days I do skip my moisturizer in the morning and just use this. If you have combo skin and want some extra moisture just at night then you could use this as your moisturizer in the morning and then at night use this followed by whatever moisturizer you're currently using.

This product has a light citrus scent, and typically I'm not a fan of citrus scents because a lot of them lean towards an orange scent (which I can't stand) but this one leans more on the lime side and I actually like it. The texture is thin and smooth, and it absorbs quickly. After application my skin doesn't feel sticky at all.

I'm not the best with keeping a consistent schedule with skincare products; as a beauty blogger I try a lot of things out because I enjoy doing that, so I'm constantly switching it up. But with that said, since using this I have noticed that my hyper pigmentation seems to be fading a bit. I notice it less and less. I certainly still have it, but I have a lot of product left in this tube to go through. So far, so good!

Final Thoughts...

If you're looking for an easy and effective way to fade hyper pigmentation and even your skin tone, then this is an excellent product to check out. It does double duty as treatment for your hyper pigmentation/uneven skin tone, as well as a moisturizer. I've loved every Anokha Skin Care product I've tried, and this one is no exception - love it too!

Anokha Skin Care Rice & Bamboo Facial Scrub - pics, swatches, review

Hello, Beautiful!

If there is one skin care brand that has been a stand over for me as of recently (within last 6 months), it's definitely Anokha Skin Care! I've been LOVING everything from this brand (I have four products currently). I've already reviewed two of their products (which I'll link in a second), and have yet another great review to share with you. This post is all about their Rice & Bamboo Facial Scrub. Check out all the product info below, along with my full review, after the pics!

Review on their Red Sandalwood & Neem Clarifying Facial Masque.
Review on their Oatmeal Cleansing Milk.

Rice & Bamboo Facial Scrub

Anokha Skin Care Rice & Bamboo Facial Scrub Info & Review:
Cost/Availability: $28.00 (2.9 oz full size). Available on the Anokha Skin Care website, on the Dermstore website, and everywhere else Anokha Skin Care is sold.
My Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Kisses

This scrub combines the exfoliating effects of rice and bamboo powder with the soothing properties of green tea. The result is skin that is smoother and pores that are cleanser and less noticeable. Bamboo powder gently exfoliates dead skin cells to encourage new skin cell renewal. Green tea provides antioxidants to help prevent premature aging. Glycerin promotes elasticity to improve tone and texture. Great for all skin types.

To use, apply a small amount to the face and massage over the face and neck gently. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat skin dry. Use 1 to 2 times weekly in place of your daily cleanser.

As with all the Anokha Skin Care products, I've been loving this! I don't know what it is about this skin care line, but it works great with my skin and always makes it look better - even has improved my acne!

I really like this facial scrub because it has a nice grit to it that isn't too harsh, but isn't weak either. It gets the dead skin off my face without being abrasive. It has a light scent - sort of a scent of bamboo and green tea; it's not a bothersome scent to me.

I like to use this about twice a week, but once a week will be fine too if you wanted to stretch its use.

Even though I'm in love with the product, I didn't give it a 5 out of 5 Kisses for the rating and I'll tell you why.... I think the jar packaging is a little messy and inconvenient for a facial scrub. I would much rather have a facial scrub in a tube or pump-top bottle. The reason behind my preference of a tube or pump-top bottle is because I tend to use scrubs in the shower, and a jar just is a bit too easy for water to get into it - not to mention if you were to drop this you'd likely lose a lot of product since it's not a dense product. However, I can get over a product's packaging if it's a great product and this is a great face scrub!

Without hesitation, I'd recommend this!

Anokha Skin Care - Oatmeal Cleansing Milk: pics, swatches, review

Hello, Beautiful!

Back in early November I posted a rave review on the Anokha Skin Care Red Sandalwood & Neem Clarifying Facial Masque - which I still LOVE. I have another great product from the Anokha Skin Care line - their Oatmeal Cleansing Milk. This cleanser smells yummy - like an oatmeal cookie - and does the job at getting my skin clean. Check out my full review below, including all the product info, after the pics!

Anokha Skin Care Oatmeal Cleansing Milk

Anokha Skin Care Oatmeal Cleansing Milk Info & Review:
Cost/Availability: $25.00 (6.1 oz full size). Available on the Anokha Skin Care website, at Dermstore, and everywhere else Anokha Skin Care products are sold.
My Rating: 5 out of 5 Kisses!

The Anokha Oatmeal Cleansing Milk is a lightweight cleanser designed for those with normal to oily skin. It combines the cleansing and soothing properties of milk with oatmeal, which gently exfoliates while reducing excess sebum. Cleans and refines the skin. Oat extract soothes irritation, balances moisture levels and removes impurities. Orange peel extract reduces dark spots and blemishes for a brighter complexion. Milk protein strengthens and nourishes the skin.

The texture of this is nice; I feel like it has a little grit to it - but in the ever so gentle way to just make sure everything gets cleansed off. Not in a harsh way, or even so much in a way like a face scrub. It's just enough to add that extra bit of something to help get your face clean. I really liked the way this cleaned my face. I thought it did a wonderful job. I have combination skin and it works well with my skin type - it doesn't dry it out.

It smells really nice - sort of like an oatmeal cookie!

I enjoyed this cleanser and would recommend this if you have normal to oily skin.

Anokha Skin Care - Red Sandalwood & Neem Clarifying Facial Masque - pics, swatches, review

Hello, Beautiful!

If you have acne-prone skin, even just monthly hormonal breakouts - then you have to check out this amazing mask from Anokha Skin Care. Their Red Sandalwood & Neem Clarifying Masque is a miracle worker for my skin, clearing my blemishes quickly and effectively, while making my skin feel super clean and firm. Check out my full review, including all the product info, after the pics!

Anokha Skin Care
Red Sandalwood & Neem Clarifying Masque

Anokha Skin Care Red Sandalwood & Neem Clarifying Masque Info & Review:
Cost/Availability: $30.00 (3.5 oz full size). Available on the Anokha Skin Care website, on the Dermstore website, and everywhere else Anokha Skin Care is sold.
My Rating: 5 out of 5 Kisses!

The Red Sandalwood & Neem Clarifying Masque combines several highly anti-septic ingredients: neem, turmeric, tulsi, red sandalwood, and rose petal powder. Turmeric also contains anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agents, and sandalwood decreases inflammation while moisturizing.

Apply this mask to your face (and neck, if you want) and leave on for at least 10 minutes and up to 20 minutes. Then rinse off and follow with the rest of your skincare routine. Use once a week.

I use this mask for 20 minutes each time I have tried it, even though their website says 10 minutes - but the packaging says 20. I tend to do other things while masks are on my face and lost track of time anyway, so I don't mind waiting the full 20 minutes (and honestly I've left this on for probably an hour once because I got so busy and forgot I had a mask on).

I don't like the smell of this mask - it's very earthy - and when you first apply it the smell is kind of strong - sort of like when you open a bag of coffee and the smell is most strong and then it kind of settles down and you don't smell it as much. That's kind of the way the scent of this mask works. I can smell it less and less as it sits on my face and I don't really mind the scent too much to the point where I wouldn't use this mask - it's certainly tolerable and you may even like the scent. And the more I use the mask the more I'm ok with the scent but I guess you can say you can really smell the ingredients, lol. Anyhow - scents don't matter, what matters if how it works!

The texture of this mask if very thick, paste/mud-like, but smoothes onto skin easily. You don't need to use a lot to get it on your face. If you have acne prone skin like me then a mask like this is a really good and easy option to incorporate into your skin care routine. Also great for those that have hormonal break outs once a month.

This mask washes off very easily and leaves your skin feeling very clean and firmer. I feel like my pores get really cleaned out when I use this mask and any break outs I am having seem to shrink after just one use of this mask. I was really impressed with how well this masks works. It really helps clear my break outs and heal them faster, while preventing new breakouts from forming. If I notice my acne starting to flare up I'll use this and it seems to calm everything down, very quickly. I've even used this as an overnight spot treatment on the really big breakouts and it is very effective at calming them down by morning.

I think this mask is totally worth the $30 price tag; a little goes a long way - the mask is thick but you don't need a thick layer and that means it will last awhile. It's also extremely effective at healing acne and helping to keep your skin breakout-free. I was truly impressed with this mask from the first use and would very much recommend this - especially to those with acne-prone skin!
