WTF Beauty: e.l.f. Cosmetics Waterproof Eyeliner Pen in Black

Hello, Beautiful!

I haven't made a WTF Beauty post in a long time (the last one was in September 2010). I think I just got into the habit of making my typical review posts and then rating the product poorly that way. But I'm sorry, I'm not wasting my time writing up a review post for this product. That's why I'm making it a WTF Beauty post!

For those that don't know, WTF stands for exactly what you think it does: What The F*ck. It's usually the first thing I say when a product truly fails and disappoints me. That's why I created WTF Beauty posts. Anyhow...

I purchased this during a 50% off sale on the e.l.f. Cosmetic's website, making it just $0.50. Even spending so little, I still felt like it was a total waste of money. This was a swatch-and-toss product to me. A lot of e.l.f. Cosmetics products are like that though; they're either really great and I can't believe they are so affordable, or they are really bad and I remember that sometimes you get what you pay for.

So why does this product land in a WTF Beauty post? I'll tell ya...

The first and very obvious reason has to do with the actual shade. The pigmentation is really lacking and doesn't apply evenly. Then, after a single use (and by a single use I mean after swatching) the tip was already slightly worn. I can't imagine how it would look after a few uses. I didn't even dare use this on my eyes. I know some people use this and are happy with it, but I can't understand why.

Maybe I'm just spoiled by other liquid liners that have great pigmentation and apply smooth and even. I own both drugstore brand and high end brand liquid liners; this e.l.f. Cosmetics liquid liner was the worst I've ever tried. Maybe I just got a bad tube? It's possible, but I know I can't be the only person who didn't love this. To sum it up: I like using liquid liners, but this one is not for me!

Shade Description: A not very pigmented black.

Now let me know what you think...
What do you think of this liquid liner? Have you tried this? If so, was it better for you? Discuss in the comments below.

  1. Uh OH! I love this liner, I'm serious! I sincerely think you got a dud! Maybe one that was sitting around too long. I mean really, I get a good line & I'm so picky.

  2. I've tried it, but it was something I got for free so it wasn't much loss anyway. The VERY first thing I obviously tested out was whether or not it was even slightly waterproof.. But it's ELF so even though they're nice and cheap and sometimes have decent cheap products, it washed off instantly. Total bummer! I'd rather just invest in a high priced and actually waterproof liner~

  3. I have this in black and a purple color. To get them to work I have to shake the product down to the bottom of the tube. It's really bizarre. I've only used each one a couple of time. I'm still looking for the perfect purple eyeliner.

  4. I have never tried that but I got several ulta liquid eyeliners when they were on sale and all of the colors worked great except the black.. it looked just like that, I was sooo mad!! Fortunately, after shaking it up (a lot!) it works great now. At least you didn't pay a lot of money for a product that was so disappointing!

  5. This product actually works just fine for me.. i mean its not the greatest.. but the ones i got were more pigmented than the one you received.. i have heard that some people have received one like yours where the pigment sucks or their pen does not even work.. have you tried contacting E.L.F? i have purchased 2 of these in the past.. and am still currently using one at the moment.

  6. I actually own this and it was good, well the first one I bought.
Then I bought another one to have as a back-up, and it was so dry.
And I bought ANOTHER one, thinking I just got a bad one, and it worked once and then completely dried out.

ELF is def a hit or miss for me.
I recently placed an order and am waiting to review them.

  7. I have this pen too…but I'm very disappointed in this product. It doesn’t waterproof (like its claim) at all. And my pen dry after 2-3 times used :(.

  8. I have this eyeliner and I don't like it at all. The shape of the tip of my eyeliner lost it's shape too.

  10. o.O You are totally right! The tip already looks worn before the one use :(

  11. I've tried it and I too was disappointed. I stopped buying ELF products because you really do get what you pay for. I can spend pennies more on NYC products and get high quality, beautiful make up that I love!

ELF is fantastic for girls who just want to play around with make up and don't take it seriously, but IMO they're not a fantastic affordable find.

  12. It's very possible I got a dud. I did shake the hell out of this thing, lol, and it still did not improve the way it came out. I really have no interest in trying to find a tube of this that works well because I have a few other liquid liners I prefer anyway; it was just one of those things where I decided since it was just $0.50 I would give it a go and if it worked well I was going to be really happy with a budget-friendly find. Too bad it didn't work out.

  13. I actually got mine to work fairly decently, but I had to use the side of the felt tip, not the tip itself, and it required a fair bit of shaking. Just a tip for those who don't want to waste their $.50. :P It's ok for quick top-lid lining, but not for anything precise.

  14. omg i know i thought that this thing was awful! see when I swatched it, i got pretty good pigmentation but it bleeds like a mo fo making my straight line on my hand just a mess. and yes it dried out in like a week. I used it once- i didn't even really use it! I just swatched it! oh well, at least it was extremely cheap

  15. I have this in dark blue. I only got to use it once or twice then stopped because if gave me allergies and hurt my eyes after it 'melted'. My mom used it too and she experienced the same thing I did. My guess is, it's either we just have sensitive skin and eyes or there's something nasty in this product to cause such reactions. We've used other eyeliners and didn't have any reactions to them so why this one? It's good that you haven't used it yet. Saves you the trouble of scratching your eye like crazy.

LIES!!! It's not waterproof. In fact, it's not even anything-proof. It slides right off of your skin like water. In fact, I think it's just water with dye. Consistency isn't nice, seriously. Everything is just awful. I think the only thing this product is good at is duping you for money. That was my first and last purchase from e.l.f. cosmetics. Not worth the price even if it's already cheap. :(

No offense to anyone who likes this product, though. Just sharing an opinion.

  16. @ Hana: I know this product is awful, lol, but please don't eliminate this brand completely from your life! Their mineral line is actually really nice (the shadows and lipsticks especially) and their studio line has some great products as well.

  17. It was kind of a traumatic experience for me but I'm still willing to give this brand another try in time. Just not the eyeliners. ;) Haha! Haven't tried those but I'll test them out when I get the chance. :) Thank you!

  18. I agree! As much as I like ELF... Sometimes you end up with the ones that really suck. I recently bought from their website. & out of the three waterproof eyeliners that I purchased, the brown one didn't even have like any product in it. Like NO swatch what so ever. Sad because that was the one that I was looking forward to theee most!

  19. This dried up on me too. Only used it once and I placed the cap on tightly. The cap is super tight I dont know why it dried up.

  20. Eww, looks like you got a bad one. I have this and love it! I got a plum one that was totally dried out once, though.

  21. As you said it's quite weird that some Elf products are just so amazing for their price and some more are just crappy. This one is obviously one on the crappy side!

  22. I have this one, and i love it! it works really well, i guess with elf you just gotta be lucky to get a good one...

  23. I dislike these too - I like their cream liners, but these "waterproof" liquid liners suck so bad :(

  24. I have this and love it! However...I've had ones that were like the one you got! It is really a hit or miss. My first liner was great! It was super pigmented and the brush's life was decent. The second one I purchased was dried out a bit! The one I am using now works great!

  25. Yea this product sucks. It took like 5 min of shaking to get product out and its nice at first then you try and use it later and its dry. It's horrible I threw it out

  26. I think we kinda got the hit or miss on Elf sometimes when we buy our products online. However, this eyeliner is actually not super suck, but it is not even worth one dollar. I tried this one and it comes with very nice consistency and application is very good. But after about two to three uses, it lose its function. It becomes way too sheer and it needs like couple of layers to get the color. It takes too long to dry. It does not last long at all on oily folded lids like mine. And yes it frays. I was excited for the first try, but after that was a fail.

  27. When I saw the lines you made, my reaction was also "WTF?!" It looks like the liner has dried out.

  28. WTF really the swatches just shows the product is soo dried out, thats what I really dislike about elf is that not all products are made the same or just dry out and they dont put an expiration date on it. I bought one of these and it works really well for about 2 months but now its dried up. im glad I used it as much as I could because i knew these would dry out!

  29. I have never tried it but I´m not too curious about it. Thanks.

  30. I totally agree with u, a complete waste of money. I got this a few months back and it just dried out after using it twice. Plus the tip just got ruined even after the first use. Extremely disappointing.

  31. I was going to order it online, but have changed my mind after reading this. *takes it out of the shopping card*

  32. I bought both the black and brown eyeliners, the brown was all dried out. The black one was amazing!! Just make sure you put the cap on, because I didnt and it dried out!! OOPS!!

  33. That's prolly why it was half off.

    ReplyDelete
  34. @ Anonymous: I purchased it during one of e.l.f.'s 50% off sales - which was their entire website, so I doubt that was the reason it was half off. From what I've experienced, a lot of their basic products (their $1 line of items) are hit or misses within a specific product. Poor quality control is my guess?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I purchased it too with the 50% but I haven't had any problem. It's good quality and gives good precision. Maybe you pushed it a little hard?

  36. Was a complete miss for me as well. I had been using Bevain's Waterproof semi-permanent liner. The store where I had been purchasing it discontinued it and couldn't find it anywhere in my town. Even on-line, from the manufacturer, they were often out of black. So I set out to find a suitable replacement. In short, ELFs product was an EPIC fail, with many others that followed. I now just buy them (my beloved Bevaine) on line, two at a time.
