Maybelline Superstay 24 Hour Lipcolor: swatches & review

Hello, Beautiful!

I have to admit that up until now I've hated long-wear lip products. Why? Because they were too drying and the shade selection was never right for me; shades seemed to be on the darker end and the lighter shades were too frosty. However, now makeup companies are formulating really wonderful long-wear lip products. Better formulas mean products that don't feel awful on your lips and will perform better. Their shade selection is improving too, but they seem to be the same colors just in newer formulas.

I recently picked up one Maybelline's Superstay 24 Hour Lipcolor in the shade Timeless Rose. I was so impressed that I went out to find another shade (as well as pick up their 24 hour foundation and 24 hour concealer - which I will do separate posts on).

Why was I impressed?
I wanted to test this out before wearing it out of the house, so I decided to apply it at night before going to bed and see what happens when I wake up. I expected the formula to dry out my lips, to fade away, to be smudged on my face, feathered out or on my pillow. But guess what? None of that happened!

I applied the lipcolor around 11pm and woke up around 6:00am. I looked in the mirror and was shocked that my lip color was still there, not smudged or faded, not feathered and not on my pillow. My lips didn't feel overly dry and they certainly didn't chap or flake. Sure, the clear balm you put over top the long-wear lip color was gone, but that was to be expected. I just re-applied the balm and went on with my morning without touching-up the color at all. I brushed my teeth, took a shower, washed my face and had a Red Bull. I looked in the mirror and the color was STILL there. It was at that moment that I knew I would wear this out in the daytime with complete confidence.

Let's get onto swatches...

...now shade by shade...

Maybelline Superstay 24 Hour Lipcolor
in the shade #090 - Timeless Rose
Shade Description: An opaque medium rose creme; no shimmer or frost - although I guess you could say there is a pearlescent sheen/shimmer to this. It just looks like a creme until you zoom in at the color on the applicator.

Maybelline Superstay 24 Hour Lipcolor
in the shade #110 - So Pearly Pink
Shade Description: A light neutral pink with subtle frost.

Maybelline Superstay 24 Hour Lipcolor Review
I am in love with this product! It stays put, the formula feels so much nicer than other long-wear lip colors and the shade selection isn't terrible (I'm just really picky with lip color shades, so it's hard for me to find one I really like).

Basic stats for Maybelline Superstay 24 Hour Lipcolor:
Formula: liquid; very well pigmented
Coverage: opaque, but can apply lighter
Wear: very, very long-wearing!
Shade Range: 30 shades
Container Type: duo-ended tube; one side for the lipcolor, the other side for the balm
Cost: about $7.50 to $8 (at regular price) depending on where you shop
Availability: I purchased one at Target and another at Wal-Mart; easily available just about everywhere Maybelline is sold
My Rating: 4 out of 5 Kisses

Formula:
This is a nicely pigmented liquid formula (basically a gloss-like formula). Their Micro-Flex formula glides on and moves with your lips. It won't crumble, cake, fade, feather or transfer when applied correctly. Apply the lipcolor, wait 2 minutes for the formula to dry (keep your mouth open during this time). The lipcolor will feel sticky until it is dry, which is normal. Then apply the clear balm on top. Touch-up the clear balm as needed throughout the day to add shine and moisture back into your lips.

Coverage:
This will give you nice opaque coverage but you can also wear this a little lighter. If you want to wear the color lighter just apply a little on your lips and spread it out with your finger. The lighter coverage will of course mean your color won't last as long, but you'll still have very long-lasting color!

Wear:
According to Maybelline's website, "No other longwear lasts longer. Period." and I fully agree. I find their formula to last better than others I've tried, even through talking, eating, drinking, sleeping, and even showering or washing your face. It held up on a hot, humid, sweaty day at the amusement park. Remove with a makeup remover (I use Make Up For Ever's Sens'Eyes, which is formulated for eyes and lips).

Shade Range:
30 shades mean you're likely to find one just for you. I'm extremely picky with opaque lip colors, mainly because I don't like to wear dark lips, but I still two shades that appealed to me. I would love to try others just to see what the colors looked like on me, but until there is a sale I'll stick with the two shades I already purchased. Check out all the shades on Maybelline's website by clicking here.

Container Type:
One side is the lipcolor, which has a doe-foot applicator making it easy to apply. The other side is the clear balm.

Cost:
Really affordable; less than $8 for each shade and you could probably find a coupon or sale somewhere.
