Make Up For Ever VS. MAC: Face & Body Foundation comparison!

Hello, Beautiful!

I've gotten several emails asking which waterproof foundation I preferred: MAC's Face and Body Foundation or Make Up For Ever's Face & Body Liquid Makeup. Up until very recently I only had Make Up For Ever's version so I couldn't make any comment's on MAC's version. But now that I own both I'm finally able to answer that question.

Check out the links below for a full review and more swatches on each foundation individually.

Make Up For Ever Face & Body Liquid Makeup - OR - MAC Face and Body Foundation?

COVERAGE: Both versions offer sheer to light buildable coverage; practically identical in coverage level and the finish.

PACKAGING: I prefer Make Up For Ever's packaging/bottle over MAC's. Make Up For Ever has a pump-top (the older versions do not) and MAC has a squeeze bottle top.

CONSISTENCY: I prefer Make Up For Ever's consistency over MAC's. Make Up For Ever's is a water based gel foundation, which is lumpy in the bottle but when shaken is smooth and nice (blends in like a dream). MAC's consistency is smooth, but very runny; also blends in nicely.

SHADES: Shade selection is a little better with Make Up For Ever, having 16 shades. MAC has 13 shades. Those three extra shades may be the ones that suit you, but really you are likely to find a match with either brand due to how sheer the formulas are.

COST: MAC offers more product for your money, costing just $32.50 for 4 ounces. Make Up For Ever costs $38 for 1.69 ounces. You get more than twice that amount of product with MAC's version for less than the cost of Make Up For Ever's version (this would be a great money saver if you wanted to mainly use this on your body). For those like that like to see the numbers, if MAC offered the same sized bottle it would be priced around $13.71 - making it the much more affordable option between the two.

WEAR: Everyone's skin is different, so I can only speak on my personal experience with both versions. For my skin, Make Up For Ever's version works a lot better. It fully sets and feels dry on my skin, without using a setting powder. Whereas MAC's version doesn't ever feel fully set on my skin. I need to set it with a setting powder or it will not stay still on my skin; it will move. Make Up For Ever's version is slightly more transfer-proof, but they are pretty comparable in that area. On me, Make Up For Ever's version lasts way longer, looking consistent.

PRODUCT LONGEVITY: Overtime both formulas will separate in their bottles, but Make Up For Ever's can be shaken back to normal. I've heard (but do not know based on personal experience) that MAC's formula will not go back to normal after it separates (which can happen in about a year or if left in the heat it could happen sooner). I've only had my MAC Face and Body Foundation for about a month now so I have no idea if and when it would separate. I guess I'll have to report back in a year.

IN CONCLUSION: If I had to only buy one I would buy the Make Up For Ever version.

MAC Face and Body Foundation: swatches, before & after pic, review

Hello, Beautiful!

I've wanted to try MAC's Face and Body Foundation for awhile now but never got around to it. I finally just asked my husband to stop by after work to pick it up for me (the MAC store is an hour away from our house, but is on his way home). I called ahead to give them a heads up he was coming in, what he was looking for and what shade he needed. They were great about that; he said as soon as he walked in they said to him "C3?" and he said "yup, that's what my wife told me to get". I have a good husband :)

Anyhow, onto swatches, a before & after pic and review...

MAC Face and Body Foundation
in the shade C3
Shade description: I normally wear NC30 or NC25 in their Studio Fix Fluid foundation; C3 was the shade recommended for me. I would say this shade if for light medium skin with yellow or golden undertones.

Before & After Pic using MAC's Face And Body Foundation in shade C3
* I applied this foundation using the e.l.f. Cosmetics Powder Brush (studio line) in circular motions to buff it in. Shown below before, after 1 layer and after 2 layers.

Basic stats for MAC Face and Body Foundation:
Formula: runny liquid
Coverage: sheer to light; buildable
Wear: long-wearing
Shade Range: 13 shades available on MAC's website
Container Type: squeeze bottle
Cost: $32.50 for 4 oz full size
Availability: at MAC store and on MAC's website
My Rating: 4 out of 5 Kisses

Formula:
This is a water-based runny liquid foundation ideal for all skin types. Water-resistant and long-wearing. Contains emollients to help moisturize and condition your skin. Formulated for face and for body.

Coverage:
Sheer to light buildable coverage. You could build this up to a light medium coverage, but you'll likely need to pair with a concealer unless you have good skin. It will even out skintone and leave you with a natural finish.

Wear:
This is a long-wearing formula that will get you through a normal day without any problems, unless you have oily skin then you may want to use a setting powder to prolong the wear and avoid makeup melt-down. I personally like to set this foundation because I don't feel like it ever fully dries on my skin and can slip around as the day goes on.

Shade Range:
13 shades available on MAC's website. Since this formula is so sheer it makes it easier to find a shade that will work for you. Just stick to the picking a "C" formula is you're normally an NC shade in MAC (warm undertones; yellow, olive, golden, beige) and stick to picking an "N" formula if you're normally an NW shade in MAC (cool undertones; red, pink, blue).

Container Type:
I don't like this container at all. Sure, you get a lot of product but you end up spilling out some of it! It's messy! The squeeze bottle just isn't practical for this runny of a liquid. I would prefer a pump top, but it's not the end of the world. It still works, just maybe a little messier than I'd prefer to handle.

Cost:
At $32.50 you really are getting a steal considering how much foundation you receive. You get 4 ounces when a typical bottle of foundation is just 1 ounce. A great deal if you plan to use this on your body.

MAC Face and Body Foundation Review:
I like this foundation but I don't love this foundation for me. I think this is a great alternative to Make Up For Ever's Face & Body Liquid Foundation, if that's what you're looking for. They are comparable in price and coverage - but you get way more with MAC. But they aren't as comparable when it comes to wear; I find Make Up For Ever's version to wear much better (but I will do a full comparison of the two in a separate post).

This foundation goes on nicely and looks nice on your skin. For me this foundation doesn't stay on my skin well. It still transfers off pretty easily and doesn't wear as nicely as other foundations. If I don't set this with a setting powder of some sort then I know it's not going to last on my skin. That may not be the case for you; if you have normal or even combo skin you will likely have no issues at all. However, for my oily girls out there you may want to use a setting powder or some other powder on top to help prolong the wear.

Will I repurchase this in the future? Eh, it's possible but I doubt it. It wasn't a foundation that really stood out to me. I have other foundations I prefer to wear that give me better coverage and last way longer. Either way I'm glad I have it because I will use it from time to time. I haven't tried it out on my body yet, so that will be the next step.

Skin Care Boot Camp

Hello, Beautiful!

Right now I'm feeling anything but beautiful. I've been very stressed the past several weeks and that is never a good thing with my Cushing's Syndrome. My hormone levels are going crazy and my skin has gone crazy too.

I have been so busy on some days that I didn't even have time to shower or wash my face. Gross, I know, but it's a fact of life. I'm sure there are plenty of people out there that can skip a day (or two) of showering when they're super busy and not leaving the house. I know I'm not the only gross one out there!

My skin was improving greatly. I had limited blemishes and the new ones that were showing up were less crazy and didn't bring a whole group of them. And now back to bad-skin-city!

So now it's time to kick my skin back into shape with what I'm calling Skin Care Boot Camp. I'm using a lot of the same products as previously listed in other blog posts, but I've added some different products and when I apply them, so I figured I'd update this blog with that post.

I did take a before photo, which I don't even dare to post until there is a major improvement with an after photo. But once I do post the before and after photos you may be shocked at how awful my skin gets in such a short period of time with lack of care and too much stress (thanks a lot, health problems). I look like one of those before photos in those Proactive commercials... maybe even worse than some. It's so bad that not even makeup can make me feel good - although I still have a great routine for covering my awful skin.

Here is my Skin Care Boot Camp product list:

MORNING ROUTINE PRODUCT LIST:
  • Sephora Face Complexion Brush
  • Patricia Wexler Dual-Action Foaming Cleanser
  • MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator (2 to 3 days per week)
  • Olay Refreshing Toner (only on days I'm really oily)
  • Patricia Wexler Anti-Aging Acne Serum (only on days I am breaking out a lot)
  • Patricia Wexler Skin Brightening Daily Moisturizer SPF 30
  • Korres Evening Primrose Eye Cream
MORNING ROUTINE REGIMEN:

First I begin by prepping my $5 Sephora Face Complexion Brush. I just run it under water to get it wet and then apply my cleanser directly to the brush head. I massage the brush head onto my skin in circular motions. There is no real rhyme or reason, I just do circles. I normally will go in one direction (such as only doing clock-wise), then rinse the brush head off and go back over the same area in the opposite direction. After I wash my entire face with the face brush (taking 20 to 30 seconds minimum per main area), I rinse off my face and the face brush. I pat my face dry (don't rub your face, especially if you have any breakouts - you can spread the bacteria or cause more skin irritation).

Every other day, or every two days, I will exfoliate my face with a good exfoliator. Currently I'm using MAC's Volcanic Ash Exfoliator. This works good to make my skin feel nice and soft, but the smoky smell is hard to deal with, but then again I'm pretty sensitive to certain smells. I apply this with my fingers to my entire face, and most times just use my fingers to gently rub it in circles to exfoliate my face. However, if it's been awhile, or if my skin just needs it, I will use my Sephora Face Complexion Brush to work in the exfoliator. Using the brush adds an extra layer of exfoliation.

Then, if my skin is oily (mostly in the summer time - not so much in the fall/winter), I will use Olay's Refreshing Toner - which I apply with a cotton ball. I apply this to my t-zone (forehead, nose and chin) but also to my cheeks, which is where a lot of my breakouts happen. This toner will help balance out your skin so it controls oil. I don't always remember to do this step, and it's not a step that will hurt or greatly benefit my skin care routine. It's just helpful.

If my skin is breaking out alot, or if I see new breakouts forming, I will apply Patricia Wexler's Anti-Aging Acne Serum to problem areas (which for me is everywhere). I don't always do this step in the morning, even if I need it. I try to because it is very helpful, but I will also use this at night if I forget to do it in the morning.

Finally, I will apply Patricia Wexler's Skin Brightening Daily Moisture SPF 30. I love this moisturizer. It's perfect and I can't really explain why. It just works. Then I'll apply my eye cream, which right now I'm using Korres Evening Primrose Eye Cream. That completes my morning routine.

TIP: I should mention that if you are applying an anti-acne treatment (like Patricia Wexler's Anti-Aging Acne Serum) you should wait 15 minutes before applying your moisturizer or anything else on top. If you don't wait you're just diluting the anti-acne formula and not getting its full benefits. This can hold true with all nighttime serums and treatments too. I like to fill that time by brushing my teeth, brushing my hair and picking out my clothes.

NIGHT ROUTINE PRODUCT LIST:
  • Makeup Remover (usually Victoria's Secret Total Makeup Remover and Make Up For Ever Sen's Eye Makeup Remover - but I will use whatever makeup remover I have on hand)
  • Sephora Face Complexion Brush
  • DDF Blemish Foaming Cleanser
  • Patricia Wexler Exfoliating Cleanser
  • Patricia Wexler Overnight Acne Repair Lotion
  • Philosophy Help Me
  • Patricia Wexler Skin Brightening Daily Moisturizer SPF 30
  • Korres Evening Primrose Eye Cream
  • Philosophy Hope in a Tube
NIGHT ROUTINE REGIMEN:

First I begin by removing any makeup I may have on my face. I don't wear makeup everyday, but most days I do. Even if I don't have makeup on I will still use a makeup remover over my face just to take off any excess oil and dirt so my cleanser can really get my skin clean and not just clean off my makeup.

Next I prep my $5 Sephora Face Complexion Brush.

Then I use Patricia Wexler's Exfoliating Cleanser. This is for the treatment of acne and I love this. I can feel it working - although not so much of an exfoliator, but since I use it daily that's okay (save harsher exfoliators for 1 to 4 times per week depending on the type). I apply this cleanser onto my face with my fingers, smearing it onto each main area. Then I use my Sephora Face Complexion Brush and work it into my skin. Then I will rinse my face and pat dry.

Next I will apply Patricia Wexler's Overnight Acne Repair Lotion. I apply this to my entire face (minus the eye area) because I break out everywhere. You may only need to apply this to one or two problem areas. If I forgot to use it in the morning, or if I'm really breaking out, I'll also use Patricia Wexler's Anti-Aging Acne Serum, allowing 2 to 5 minutes in between to dry.

Then I apply Philosophy's Help Me, which helps with dark pigmentation, pores and fine lines.

Finally I can apply my moisturizer and eye cream and get to bed!

Well, that's the plan! I know it worked before, so it should work again. We shall see...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now onto my September favorites!

September is more than half way over and I've fallen in like, lust and love with many beauty products this month. I've also come to dis-like a few beauty products.

My September Favorites:

Makeup Sponges

I've fallen in like with using makeup sponges again. I know, there is nothing special or fancy or magic about makeup sponges. It's almost kind of pointless to even list them. But I went months without using them; I was hooked on using my 187 MAC Stippling Brush to stipple on my foundation. And although I still prefer using a brush over a sponge any day, the sponges have been such a time saver in the mornings. For that reason alone they are on my September favorites list!

WEN
I've fallen in lust with the WEN hair care line! The reason it's lust and not love is because I'm not sure it's really a system I can keep up with. It requires a lot of time to do it correctly, you need a lot of product, and I can't stand the Fig smell (in fact, I'm sending it back to get a different scent). If you haven't tried WEN yet both you and your hair are really missing out! After just one application, my hair was completely transformed; not only in how it looked, but how it felt too! I did a big blog post about my experience using WEN, including pics, which you can check out here.

L'Oreal Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base
I've absolutely fallen in love with this primer! It is for sure my favorite primer, probably of all time! I even like it more than my Make Up For Ever HD Primer (which is a beautiful primer that works amazingly). It's just the perfect primer for me! I did a blog post about this primer, including swatches, which you can check out here.

Ikea GISLEV Rug!

This rug is just $19.99 at Ikea. I absolutely love it. It goes beautifully in my bedroom (which is themed out in black, white and gray tones). It's also the rug you'll see on Project Runway (in the girls' bedroom). In fact, I'm thinking of going back to Ikea just to pick up a second (for my office). Although I was worried it would feel really awful since it's only $20 and it's 6'x5' in length. It's not a  luxurious rug at all, but it does its job (at least in my house) and it's a really affordable way to change up your room space.

Jason Mraz Concert!!!!!!!!!!
Only a few days left (10) until the Jason Mraz concert! I am super excited and I'm already thinking of what makeup and hair look I'll choose. I have no idea actually, and I'll probably try out several over the next ten days. Any suggestions??

My September Dis-Likes:

My recent purse purchase from Target:
Okay, I'll start by saying I generally love the purses I get from Target (I actually get a lot of compliments on my purse and people are usually surprised when I say I got it at Target). Sure, they're no Kate Spade, but they allow me to change out my purse often without breaking the bank. I recently picked up a pretty deep plum hued purse (with black and white zebra print inside). I loved the way it looked, it was big enough to carry all my crap (like my coupon organizer thingy), and it was under $30. BUT every time I wear this it bugs me. Only one strap will stay on my shoulder. The other falls off right away. I have to keep pulling it back up... over and over again. The only way the straps will stay up is if I hold them up! It's frustrating, but yet for some reason I continue to use this purse everyday (I don't want to waste my money and it's far past the return policy - plus it's used). This is the first purse from Target that has given me these issues.

Bare Escentuals Natural Lip Gloss
I have this in "Sugar Cookie", which is a pretty shade and the gloss actually smells/kind of tastes like a sugar cookie. But it's so freakin' sticky!!! The kind of sticky gloss where you talk and your lips stick together. The kind of sticky gloss where your hair will surely get stuck in it not once, but 100 times. If this gloss wasn't so sticky I would really love it, but it's just too sticky for me (and that's saying a lot, considering I love the Stila Lip Glazes - which are slightly sticky)!

Body Wash - almost all of them!
I don't know what it is this month. I just can't stand the way any of my body washes smell anymore (well, that's not completely true - I still love my Korres Bitter Almond body wash). I get an instant headache from my body washes and I'm forced to use the "back ups" because I'm out of my Korres body wash. Maybe it's the changing of the seasons that's making my nose change the way it picks up smells, or maybe it's not. Whatever the case, I want to throw all my body washes out at this very moment (but I won't, I'm too cheap for that, so instead they will go into the guest bathroom where most of my beauty product cast-off's end up).

My Neighbor's Dog(s)
I doubt my neighbors read this blog, but I secretly hope they do because maybe they aren't aware of this situation (and the fact that all the surrounding houses can't stand your dog(s) barking). EVERY NIGHT their dog(s) bark... and bark... and bark... and bark... and FREAKIN' BARK. I have dogs - I have two right now, but I've had five at one time - I can tolerate dog barking and I understand that dogs are going to bark. If anyone in my neighborhood could tolerate dogs barking, it's me. But their dog(s) bark a lot - especially during normal sleeping hours. I don't really mind the dog going bark-crazy during the day. I can even tolerate it going bark-crazy at 9pm (despite my son hearing your dog(s) barking and not being able to sleep). But I can no longer tolerate the midnight, 1am, 2am, 3am, and even the 4am barking!! It has got to stop! It's making me crazy! You better believe the moment I get pregnant is the moment your 9 month countdown begins to get that dog barking under control. Because once I have a newborn in the house sleep is precious - both to me and the new baby. If your dog even once wakes my baby up, or me up, I will become that mean neighbor. I don't want to become that neighbor - you know, the one that calls the cops because your dog is making too much noise - but I'm not the only neighbor that can't stand your dog(s) barking, and probably by the time I actually get pregnant someone else will have called the cops on you anyway. This was a nice and quiet neighborhood before you moved in. Now you have the most annoying house in the neighborhood. I'm so lucky to be your neighbor.

[Just to clarify: I do like our neighbors, I just hate their dogs. Also, I'm not pregnant now, but my husband and I have been trying to get pregnant again for years. Eventually it will happen... I hope!]

Morning Routine

Hello, Beautiful!

It's back to school season and that means quick & easy morning routines. Whether you're going to school yourself, or you're taking your kids to school, it never seems to go all that smoothly in the mornings (at least not for me). I'm working on a makeup and hair routine that will take around 30 minutes.

Seeing as how I have major flaws to cover, I have to do my makeup in the mornings. I just don't feel comfortable facing the world with a face full of acne and acne scars.

Yesterday morning was the first day of school for my son, and that was a bit rough getting ready in the morning. I had taken a shower the night before in hopes it would save time in the morning. It did save time, but my hair does NOT come back from that. I have a collic in my hair and no amount of blow drying can help. I knew it wouldn't work, but in my head I was hoping it would suddenly change. My makeup also didn't work out as well as I had hoped, so after I got home I re-did the whole thing.

This morning I went back to normal routine of taking a shower in the morning and my hair is collic free! And although you can't tell in the photo below, my hair is pretty long at the moment (down to about mid-back). I'm growing it out again because I love my long hair. I think it's finally back to the length I enjoy most (woo hoo).

Here is my "mommy morning face" photos, product list, and morning routine:

[Don't mind my nose.. it's broken (although healed now) and I plan to get it fixed in the spring.]

Primer: L'Oreal Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base
Foundation: Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Foundation (shade: 123)
Concealer: MAC Studio Sculpt (shade: NC 20), Laura Geller Real Deal Concealer (shade: Medium), Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer (shade: 6)
Setting Powder: Mally Beauty Poreless Perfection Skin Finisher
Brows: Smashbox Brow-Tech To Go (shade: Brunette)
Eye Shadow: Benefit Creaseless Cream Shadow/Liner (shade: r.s.v.p.), Smashbox Waterproof Shadow/Liner (shade: Graphite)
Eye Liner: Smashbox Limitless Eye Liner (shade: Smoke)
Mascara: Make Up For Ever Smoky Lash
Lips: Smashbox Lip Enhancing Gloss (shade: Allure)

Today's Morning Makeup Routine:

After I applied all my skin care (including moisturizer), I applied primer. I've really fallen in love with L'Oreal's Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base. It's an amazing primer and I will do a full review on it very soon. I always allow primer to set for about two to five minutes (I blow dry my hair while it's setting so I'm not wasting time).

Then it's the most important time: concealer time! Today I did a cocktail of concealers. They're all different shades, but together (used alone or mixed) work really well to cover my flaws. I mixed MAC's Studio Sculpt Concealer with Make Up For Ever's Full Cover Concealer - which have different textures (MAC's is thicker and drier). I used the Laura Geller Real Deal Concealer by itself. I let my concealer dry for about a minute or two.

Then it's the second most important time: foundation time! I used a MAC 187 Brush to apply the Make Up For Ever's HD Invisible Foundation, stippling it on so I didn't distrub the concealer. Once my foundation was dry I applied Mally's Poreless Perfection Skin Finisher over top.

Then it was onto brows. I need to fill in my brows because due to my health issues some of my eye brow hair fell out, leaving very sparse areas - especially at the beginning of my brow right in the middle of it. I've been using Smashbox's Brow-Tech for years and years, but when they came out with the "to go" version I had to try it out. And let me tell you, I'm in love with it! I don't think I can go back to the powder version again! (I'll also do a full review on this product).

I didn't use a shadow primer today, although I guess I should have since I don't plan to re-do my makeup before I have to pick my son up. But I'm pretty sure the choices I selected are going to stay on all day anyway. I first used Benefit's Creaseless Cream Shadow/Liner all over my lid. Then I applied Smashbox's Shadow/Liner to the outer corners of my eye lids (top lid only). Followed by applying a very thin line of Smashbox's Limitless Eye Liner to the upper lid only, staying very close to the lash line.

Finally, I threw on a coat of Make Up For Ever's Smoky Lash and a coat of Smashbox's Lip Enhancing Gloss in Allure (which is a beautiful nude shade).

From start to finish (shower, cleaning my face, face serums/moisturizer, hair, makeup, and getting dress) took me about 45 minutes. Not too bad (for me anyway). Although I did nothing with my hair, so if I actually took the time to do my hair it would have added on another 5 to 15 minutes.

I will be testing out many morning routines all month long. Hopefully by the end of September I will have one that is quick & easy (30 minutes or less). But I think until my skin clears up I'll be stuck doing the long concealer and foundation routine (which takes about 10 minutes itself).

Do you have a morning routine you want to share? I'd love to hear it!

And because I'm just so proud of my son starting kindergarten, here are some photos from his first day of school (his faux hawk is by his request; he calls it his "rock star hair"):

WTF Beauty...

Hello, Beautiful!

It's after 1:00am and I just can't sleep. I'm tired, but I have beauty on my mind and felt like I needed to make a blog post. But not just any blog post, I wanted to bring you the first edition of WTF Beauty.

Yes, WTF really does stand for what you think it does. If you don't know what WTF stands for, it stands for "What The F*ck". Yup, nothing pretty about that! But hey, that’s the first thing I think of when a beauty product disappoints me. Basically, WTF Beauty is just like a ‘Don't believe the Hype' or 'Beauty Rant' type of post.

Anyhow, in this edition I will address fake cosmetics (one product in particular) and a few tips on how to shop smarter.

I warn you ahead of time, this post will be long. Shall we get started?

A few months back I purchased the Smashbox Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder in shade Light from an online discount beauty retailer. It was only $29.99, although it didn't include the mini kabuki brush, and I thought to myself 'wow, that's a great deal - it's mine!'. And sure enough as soon as it arrived I had to test it out. I had heard such amazing things about this powder and was expecting to jump for joy over this.

No jumping for joy happened. It did give me a glow, but not right away. I think my oily skin was to thanks for the glow and not the powder. Considered this product talks up how great the “Halo Glow” is I really thought that would happen. Sadly, it just looked really powdery and dry. As it sat on my skin it just got worse as the day went on. It didn't look fresh and natural like Smashbox said it would. I kept thinking that it must be my skin and I'll just have to work with it. Time went on and I continued to work with it, but only having the same less than favorable results.

Then I recently picked up the Smashbox Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder in shade Medium from that QVC kit I blogged about. I needed a darker shade, since the Light shade made me look really sickly pale. When I got this in the mail I immediately tried it out. Jumping for joy finally happened! It is like night and day from the Light shade to the Medium shade. It was almost like I had a completely different product.

The Medium shade did everything Halo claimed to. It went on beautifully, looked totally natural instead of totally noticeable, it made my skin look hydrated and healthy instead of dry and powdery, and best of all it gave me that Halo glow that I’ve heard so much about.

I then jetted up the stairs, into my closet (which is where my makeup table is set up), pulled out my Halo in Light and started to compare the two side by side. Right away I noticed the sticker on the bottom of the compact was different. They looked similar, and if you didn’t know any better you’d think they were the same. But there were differences – like the symbols being switched to the opposite side. Right there an alarm went off in my head and it was like I could hear someone yelling ‘It’s a fake, it’s a fake’! That’s when I said “WTF!”

Ugh, I was so angry! Who knows what I’ve been putting on my face for the past few months! I feel gross just thinking about it. I know that powder will never touch my face again – ever!

But I guess I should look at both sides of the story and try to piece together a rational explanation. Maybe, just maybe, Smashbox has re-formulated Halo. Okay – that seems silly. If they did it would be listed on their website and talked about in their demo’s on QVC. Plus, the product isn’t that old to need a reformulation so soon. Okay, so then maybe, just maybe, Smashbox changed their stickers and packaging ever so slightly. I mean, that could happen – I could see that happening. Ugh, who am I kidding?? It’s probably a complete fake! I’m 99.9% sure of it!

I'm going to eventually take pictures of the two Halo powders side by side for you to see and compare. Then we can all play 'spot the difference' to find the fakeness.

Another thing that ticks me off is a few months ago I purchased two other Smashbox products from the same retailer. One was a Jet Set Liner in the black shade. I thought at $6.99 this is a deal, esecially since it is $22 retail. Well when I got in the mail I looked at it and didn’t think it was authentic. The jar looked the same, but again, the sticker threw me off. But my original Jet Set Liner’s sticker was so worn that I couldn’t compare the two. The other product is the Photo Finish Primer. The bottle looks a little different, and the performance of the product really is not up to the same standards. Now after the Halo situation I’m questioning those products too. However, I should mention that I’ve purchased other Smashbox and other brands from this same retailer and they’ve been 100% authentic. Either way, I’m hesitant to make another purchase because I don’t know if I’ll get a real item or a fake one.

[NOTE: I purposely did not mention the online retailer’s company name or website address. I don't want to bash anyone on a public blog. However, I do want to protect my readers. If you’re interested in knowing the retailer I purchased these items from you can email me and I will let you know. I won't give you their website address or company name, but I will tell you clues as to who it is. From there you can decide to Google it or not.]

Here are some tips to help you all shop smarter:

1. Beware brand new products at unbelievable prices!
This one is tricky but I wanted to start here. Since I own and operate my own discount website, which carries cosmetics, I know a little about the discount beauty business. It's perfectly normal and common to see items at discount beauty retailers that are still in other stores at regular price. I've sold, and still sell, many items that you can see on store shelves at Wal-Mart and Target for full price.

However, it's not all that common to see brand new, just on the market beauty items at discount beauty retailers. Items that are limited edition, new collections, or a breakthrough new product, are generally items that won’t show up at discount beauty stores for awhile. For example, the retailer I talked about above had posted items from the Smashbox Heartbreaker's collection (they had a shadow palette and roller ball gloss), and that collection had just hit stores a week or so before. I thought "wow, who are their sources? I want that kind of availability". But the truth is their sources are probably not authentic, not even close to it.

It's incredibly easy to re-create popular high-end beauty brands. Companies overseas (mostly in China) can have a product re-created - packaging and all - and out to you in less than a week. It's crazy! Smashbox, NARS, and MAC are some of the most popular and commonly re-made fakes.

And remember to ask yourself why those products are so deeply discounted. Being in this industry I understand why most of the products are discounted. Discount beauty stores deal with store overstocks, manufacture overstocks, manufacture packing changes/formula changes, store closings, and discontinued products. So for example, if Smashbox wants to change their packaging, or re-formulate a product, they'll want to clear out all the original packaging or formulation to make room for the new changes.

2. Educate yourself with what the fakes look like and what the real deal looks like too!
One of the easiest fakes to spot are the NARS blushes - not just on eBay, but other discount beauty retailers too. You'll see a NARS blush with the word "NARS" imprinted into the blush. NARS never has, and probably never will, do that to their blush. That's an obvious fake! But not all fake NARS blush has that obvious imprint. But that's where educating yourself on what the real deal looks like is important. Go to the brands website and check it out. Then re-visit the product you're looking at. Compare and decide from there.

3. Beware sellers who use stock photos!
A stock photo is a photo the brand/manufacture has taken of that product. That image can be used at authorized online retailers worldwide. This can be tricky too, because a lot of retailers use stock photos - even eBay sellers (and not always with authorized use).

If a seller uses stock photos of certain products, but photos they’ve taken themselves of other products, that’s usually a huge red flag. They don't want you to see what the actual product you'll receive will look like because then you might know they have fakes. The pretty, perfect (and almost always photoshoped) stock photo is what lures buyers in.

Look for sellers that have taken the pictures of the products themselves. It's okay if they include a manufacture picture or two (such as a swatch) but you want to see exactly what you're buying.

But again, it can be tricky! I've seen an online retailer selling NARS blushes - with the 'NARS' imprinted in the blush – with nicely taken photos (taken by them) and photoshoped them pretty professionally. To an uneducated buyer the photos look like they could be stock photos from NARS. And to some, pretty professional pictures usually mean pretty, professional products.

So you see, there are many reasons we don't sell as many high-end/luxury brands at ValentineKisses.com as we would like to. It's extremely difficult to find authentic products and authentic dealers. It's a risk we as a small business can't afford to take, and we certainly don't want to sell anyone a fake product! We're lucky to have found an authentic Smashbox dealer, and from time to time we do get in some other authentic high-end brands - but it’s not all that often and we’re working on changing that.

I will write a more in-depth article about spotting fakes (and I'll do one for each brand that is commonly reproduced as fakes). But ladies, please beware and shop smart!

I think it's finally time for bed (it's nearly 3am now!), and I'm worn out from a full day of swatches, and then an evening out at Chuck E. Cheese with family. Won my son over 2,000 tickets - go me (and my husband)!

I love home shopping networks...

Hello, Beautiful!

Lately I've been addicted to QVC and HSN. I'm a sucker for home shopping networks. I love seeing the live demo of beauty products, but I'd be lying if I said that's why I tune in. I tune in because it can be entertaining to watch.

I love the bloopers that can happen (although those are pretty rare, but they're great when they happen). I love watching the hosts get so excited over the most simple items, and hearing them talk in awe at every product. But I shamelessly look forward to the insane callers. Sure, there are plenty of normal callers, but there are some pretty bat-sh*t crazy people out there. They'll tell you their life story, their cat's name, and ask the host to say hello to their cat (who is, of course watching right along with them in their animal sized Snuggie).

Yes, I have way better things to do, but when I'm stuck on the computer working I like to have the TV on. QVC and HSN have been my entertainment of choice lately. I usually only watch during any beauty related presentation.

QVC in particular has caused a dent in my budget lately. There were items I needed to buy (like my DDF facial cleanser), items I semi-needed/wanted (like the St. Tropez Tanning Mousse I wanted to use before a wedding I had to go to), and then there are the items I didn't need but just had to try out.

I already blogged about the Laura Geller concealer - which I'm still very much in love with and still very much recommend. Now I am going to blog about my latest QVC purchase. I really should have waited and posted this blog post tomorrow (Tuesday) because that's when the kit will likely arrive at my house and I can show swatches, but I'll just update this post or make a new post when I do make swatches.

Did you tune into QVC on Friday when they had Smashbox on? They had a beautiful kit, which was priced just under $70 as their "Today's Special Value" (it's now priced at $76.38 and they're sold out of 'Fair' and 'Light').

The value of the kit is a really good one. The Halo powder alone retails for $59 by itself, and I was in the market to buy a new Halo in the Medium shade (I have it in the Light shade - which no longer works for my skintone). I like using Halo combined with concealer for a quick and easy morning routine on the days I take my son to school. He'll be in kindergarten (I can't believe I can even say that; the years go by too quickly), and I'll be driving him to school most of the time. I don't have great skin, so I can't leave the house without makeup on (well, I can, but I don't want to). So I will likely be using the Halo a lot (but I may try using Bare Escentuals in the morning).

So let's talk about everything included in the kit (and a photo below from QVC):

  • Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder (I chose the Medium shade)
  • Quick Fix Eye Shadow Palette #1 - which includes five shades (champagne, navy, shimmering purple taupe, merlot, and shimmering peach nude)
  • Creamy Lip Crayon in Pink Fig (a brown-pink)
  • Lip Enhancing Gloss in Sweet (a sparkling pink champagne)
  • Waterproof Shadow Liner in Graphite (a metallic gray)
  • Cheek Duo, which includes a Satin Blush and Loose Powder in Candle-Lit Pink
  • Plus you receive a Baby Buki Brush (to use with Halo) and a #30 Shadow Liner Brush (to use the Waterproof Shadow Liner or the powder shadows)

I love buying Smashbox kits from QVC because they often have colors and products that are exclusive to QVC for a period of time. In this kit the shadow palette, lip crayon, lip gloss shade, and shadow liner shade are exclusive to QVC until March 2011. The shadow palette and creamy lip crayon are world-wide launches.

The shadow palette has some pretty shades, but I think only three of them will get a lot of use. The navy shade I'll likely use as a liner, or when doing a blue smoky eye. But the merlot color (that matte looking burgundy) is a shade I won't put near my eye. I know what looks good on me and that color does not. Seven years ago I had my wedding makeup trial at MAC and the lady went by a color chart. The color chart apparently told her that using a burgundy shadow on both top and bottom lids would look great as a wedding day look. It made me look like I was on drugs and was the least flattering thing possible. Just because my wedding was in February, and my colors were red, black and white, doesn't mean I want red shades on my face! It was so bizzare and she was so stuck on that shade. She tried so hard to get me to buy it, even after telling her no at least a dozen times. The rest of the makeup she did was awful too. I ended up picking my own shades out for my wedding and refused to buy anything she put on my face. It was that bad. I've had better MAC experiences, but that was by far the worst!

Anyways, back to the Smashbox Kit...

The blush looks really pretty and very wearable. I go through phases where I won't leave the house without blush and then I go through phases where I wouldn't think of putting blush on. It all depends on my skin. If I'm having a lot of breakouts on my cheeks I will avoid blush. And at this very moment my skin is having issues, but I will be trying this blush out anyway! The little highlighter color that comes in the bottom of the blush compact looks very pretty. I hope it looks as pretty in person.

The lip pencil looks like a nice wearable shade on its own, but looks really pretty with the gloss on top. I hope I fall in love with the colors when I see them.

The Waterproof Shadow Liner is a product I've wanted to try from Smashbox for awhile now. I've heard great things about it. The color included in this kit is really pretty. I love grays and blacks for my eyes. I use them very often (I use gray a lot), so I look forward to trying it out!

All in all I'm very excited to get this kit. I hope it shows up at my doorstep tomorrow! I will post swatches and maybe even a photo of me wearing the full kit.

If you also ordered this kit I'd be interested in hearing your review after you get it and try it all out!

Best concealer there is!

Hello, Beautiful!

This is definitely a product recommendation post, but it's a ramble too. I'm in a talkative mood - probably because it's midnight, I've been up too long, I was out too much today, and I'm exhausted. I'm almost always super talkative when I'm tired, so I warn you now that this blog post will likely ramble on and on instead of being direct and to the point (but I'll do my best to keep this from becoming a novel).

Today I made a trip to Sephora with no specific products in mind that I wanted to purchase. I was meeting up with a friend to give her some hair accessories she's using for her wedding (beautiful rhinestone twists - which are coming to the website soon and look like you're wearing one karat diamonds in your hair).

Normally I order online from Sephora because the closest Sephora to me is nearly an hour away. The distance doesn't really phase me all that much though. I used to drive the same distance Monday through Friday when I had a boring office job. My husband still makes the commute everyday. I'm lucky enough to be a stay-at-home/work-at-home mom. I don't miss the commute, although an hour to myself in the car to listen to any music I want, as loud as I want, would be nice. Or to have an hour of silence. Or an hour to talk to anyone without interuptions from a 5 year old. Anyhow, back to the topic on hand.

Although I was tempted to purchase many, many items from Sephora I only ended up buying one thing (which is shocking). And it's not even something I don't have (even more shocking). I picked up a concealer - the best concealer there is.

It's Make Up For Ever's Full Cover Concealer. It will cost you $30, but the tube will last you a very long time. Because it's full coverage a little will go a long way. I have this now in three shades. The latest is shade 8 because I needed a darker shade due to the summer tan I have going on. I also have this in shades 4 and 6.

For me, concealer is a neccessity. I have really awful skin thanks to my health issues. I've never had an acne problem but now I have adult acne (for the past 3 years). I break out everyday usually and I scar very easily (it scars brown).

[Although I started a new skincare routine and it has been working miracles! I will be doing a post about that soon.]

No one ever believes me when I say I have bad skin. That's because whenever I see someone I have makeup on. I've become a pro at covering it all up and making my face as flawless as possible. I couldn't do that without using this concealer.

I cannot live without this concealer. I repeat, I cannot live without this concealer!

It's simply the best of them all, and believe me, I've tried a lot since getting this hideous skin. It beats out MAC, Amazing Concealer, Benefit, Philosophy, NARS, Smashbox, and many others.

The consistency is a thick, creamy liquid that blends easily and isn't drying. It's waterproof and sweat resistant. It's very long lasting.

One tip though: if you're trying this product at the store be sure to blend it into your skin and let it dry before you select a color. I find that they dry down with a slightly different undertone than they first appear with just a dot squeezed out. For example, in the winter I picked shade 4 which looked perfect in the store, but after I tested it out on my face and let the product dry, I realized it had a slight pink undertone to it (which isn't my undertone). Shade 6 was the next shade that worked for my undertone. Shade 8 works for me perfectly at the moment.

Anyhow, I wanted to make this post because I really think this is the bees knees of concealers.

Pick it up at Sephora.com for $30 or visit your local Sephora store.

I don't have swatch photos just yet, but they will be up on the Valentine Beauty Closet soon.

Speaking of the Valentine Beauty Closet...

It is opening soon! If you don't know what it is let me give you a quick description:

The Valentine Beauty Closet will be a great source of all things beauty related. You'll find swatch photos, reviews, tutorials, tips, and so much more. New stuff will be added every week and you can even make requests on what you want to see next.

I've been super busy uploading hundreds and hundreds of swatch photos. In fact, I think it's more like thousands of swatch photos! Not only that, but I finally got an HD camera and I've started to re-make all my videos so they are better quality. That's been taking the most time. Although there is no exact opening date just yet, I'm hoping to have it launch by the end of August.

Anyhow, I really need to get to bed.

Until next time,

xoxo with love & beauty,

Five Favorites: December 2009 Edition

Hello, Beautiful!

These are my current five favorite beauty products for December 2009:

1. The Dior holiday eyeshadow palette
This is a beautiful palette to have! I received this as a Christmas gift from my mom (thanks mom!). I was giddy upon receiving it, as I am upon meeting any new beauty product for the first time.

This palette contains four beautiful iridescent shadows that I would describe as the perfect neutral palette. It contains a dark brown/plum, a light pink, a taupe and a champagne gold. The champagne gold color is more of a highlight color than it is a shadow, but it's beautiful in its own.

The pigmentation does not disappoint. I've tested these out with and without shadow primer. Of course they lasted longer with the shadow primer but they still held up for hours without it. The colors also show up beautifully, with or without shadow primer.

Pics & Swatches:

[no shadow primer beneath]

You can purchase this palette at Sephora for $42. They just took it off their website on December 22, so I guess they no longer carry it online. You may still have luck at your store but it's evident that this palette will be gone before we know it!

2. NARS Oil-Free Foundation
This is the only foundation that I've ever purchased more than one bottle of in a row. I normally try out a foundation and half way through buy a different one because I've become bored or just aren't satisfied. I have terrible skin due to my health issues so I need a full coverage foundation. Not many pass my test, but this one makes the grade!

It gives you a near flawless face with a beautiful matte finish. I don't always need to use concealer with this foundation, which I love. It is fast drying, which seems to be the main complaint from some women who have tried this. I actually find that to be a good thing.

I prefer to apply this with a foundation brush (I use MAC's 190 foundation brush), but I also get great results using a sponge or even my fingers (which is the method NARS endorses).

Sephora no longer carries this product on their website but you can still purchase it directly from narscosmetics.com for $40.

TIP: When selecting your shade go by the shade description and not what it looks like on your computer screen. My perfect shade (Budapest) looked too dark on the screen but the description matched my skintone perfectly. I'm also mostly Hungarian so it's not a big surprise that Budapest matches my Hungarian skintone so well.

3. NARS "I Want You" Lipgloss Set
This was my first introduction to NARS lip glosses and I gotta say I'm impressed! This set features five mini lip glosses in these popular shades: Turkish Delight, Greek Holiday, Orgasm, Striptease, and Dolce Vita.

It may say "mini" but they're not very mini at all. In fact, if you've ever owned an original Smashbox lipgloss they are the exact same size. What I love best about these glosses is they're nicely pigmented, feel comfortable on your lips and aren't sticky at all. They last a good length of time, considering they are a gloss.

Because you receive five beautiful shades it's hard to pick a favorite, but I think I like Dolce Vita the best. It's one of those "must have" colors that every girl should have in her collection.

You can buy this set at Sephora.com for $45 - that's less than $10 per gloss!! NARS also has a 5-piece lip gloss collection on their website for $40, but I don't like the color selection as much as the one I have.

4. "Best of Make Up For Ever" Value Set
This is one set I couldn't pass up... in fact, I purchased it twice! It's a "beauty insider only" set at Sephora (although I've recently seen it at HSN too). It's a limited edition set so you better buy it now while it's around.

If you've never tried Make Up For Ever's brand this is a great introduction into some of their best products. If you're a fan of Make Up For Ever's brand then you must have this set! The value is amazing considering what you receive:
  • A full sized Smokey Lash ($22 if purchased separately)
  • A full sized Aqua Eyes liner ($17 if purchased separately)
  • A full sized HD Microfinish Powder ($30 if purchased separately)
  • A travel-sized HD Microperfecting Primer ($15 if purchased separately)
  • A travel-sized Sens'Eyes Waterproof Sensitive Eye Cleanser
[Keep in mind the pics below show the products used... and I forget to get a close up of the primer]

Get it now at Sephora for just $49!! That's an AMAZING value ($91.50 to be exact)

5. My $2.99 "makeup brushes"
I have a mix of brushes in my makeup brush collection. Some from Victoria's Secret, a few from MAC, some from IMAN, and then there are non makeup-makeup brushes. I usually go to Michael's craft store (or any craft store for that matter) and browse their paint brush section. Usually you can find some good brushes at great prices.

I recently picked up two brushes that were $2.99 each. One I use for a concealer brush (although applying cream shadow would be another use). The handle isn't super long like some paint brushes and the bristles are soft, yet dense enough to handle the application of concealer.

The second one I use as a liner brush. Like the other brush, the handle is still short enough to handle the brush with ease. The bristles aren't as dense as some of my other liner brushes, but this will create delicate, soft lines. I don't think this will be an everyday brush, but it will definitely come in handy. I have also tried this brush when applying brow powder and I actually prefer using it for that method.

So those are my five favorite beauty products for the month of December. Check back in January for my January favs!!

Until next time....
